We’ll be the first to admit that we were a wee bit disappointed when Johnny Depp and Amber Heard ?announced they were dating. Rumours had swirled for months following the end of Depp’s fourteen-year relationship with Vanessa Paradis that The?Rum Diary?co-stars were together. It almost seemed too conventional a story for Johnny Depp – ?older man with children leaves long-time partner for young?woman he met at work – all you need to add on to that is that she was the nanny and you’ve got a neat synopsis of basically every Hollywood break-up ever (Hi Ben Affleck, Gavin Rossdale, Jude Law etc. etc).
But three years later the pair married in a quiet ceremony in February 2015 and they seem as happy and loved-up as ever. At the recent premiere of Heard’s new movie The Danish Girl,?the usually reserved Depp opened up to E! News about his wife. “I’m a lucky man.” he said, smiling .
He went on to talk about how they first bonded over blues music and literature. “We connect on a lot of levels but the first thing that really got me was she’s an aficionado of the blues,” the Pirates of the Caribbean‘star said. “I would play a song, some old obscure blues song and she knew what it was.” He continued, “She’s very very literate. She’s a voracious reader as I have been so we connected on that as well. And she’s kind of brilliant.” How sweet is that!
The two wore matching tuxedos on the red carpet and Depp reckons that a period drama is the perfect genre for Heard saying “I always felt like I was supposed to be in a different time andI kind of felt that way about her the first time I saw her. So it looks right and perfect for her. I’m very proud of her” he said,?grinning for ear to ear.
The Danish Girl??also stars Eddie Redmayne?as the first transsexual woman to undergo gender reassignment surgery. Redmayne is already being tipped for an Oscar nod following on from his win last year for his portrayal as Steven Hawking in?The Theory of Everything.
The Danish Girl?will be released in Ireland on December 1st.
