amal clooney at court
Our love for Amal Clooney n?e Alamuddin knows no bounds and is regularly validated. Be it on the Golden Globes red carpet – we loved the opera gloves – or in court, where she does her regular day job.
As she arrived at court yesterday she was faced with a wall of photographers. One reporter queried her fashion choices, a requisite black robe, to which she replied ?I’m wearing Ede & Ravenscroft.? The ?label? has been making barristers gowns the end of the 17th century.
The international human rights barrister is appearing this week in the European Court of Human Rights on behalf of Armenia. The country is bringing a case against Dogu Perincek, a Turkish politician who denied the 1915 Armenian genocide. In 2005 Perincek called the genocide an ?international lie? and was convicted in Switzerland. The ECHR later ruled that Perincek’s conviction violated his freedom of speech. Ottoman Turks killed 1.5 million Armenians in 1915, an event that is held to be the first genocide of the tumultuous 20th century. Turkey denies the genocide has ever happened.
The case is now being appealed, which is where Amal and her legal brain come in. She’s representing Armenia and arguing that the ECHR ruling ?cast doubt on the reality of the Armenian genocide that the people suffered 100 years ago.?
Her speech below is really something and makes us glad that modern celebrity can draw attention to such cases.
