Everything that happened on Instagram at day one of NYFW

Everything that happened on Instagram at day one of NYFW

Hello and welcome to the greatest show on earth, aka, New York Fashion Week. September 6 marks the start of a marathon of shows, events, parties and shopping as the industry plunges itself into the new season. There’s serious excitement online as editors, journalists, celebrities, influencers and models get ready to try on their latest wares for the awaiting street photographers.

The week kicked off at Tom Ford with a dramatic catwalk show featuring Gigi Hadid, Kaia Gerber and a star-studded guest-list. Jeremy Scott’s Moschino delivered an acid-trip, punk-esque collection complete with foil lipstick (get ready to see it make a comeback), giant “riot” logo jumpers and T-shirts, and a heavy dose of acrylic and jewel-encrusted knits. Followers of Rodarte are anticipating the brands return to NYFW later this week after it made the move to Paris for its last number of collections. And speaking of Paris, Paris Hilton showed off a different side wearing New York label Namilia, which is far from soft velour and tiaras that she’s synonymous with. Ronnie Fieg of Kith showed three new collaborative collections including one with Versace, Tommy Hilfiger and Justin Beiber, and Dior’s infamous – and iconic – saddle bag made a handful of high-profile appearances on the busy streets of NYC. While we’re not physically there this year, Instagram has afforded us a birds-eye view of the entire spectacle, and t really is a feast for the senses. Here are three things that caught our eye from day one at NYFW.

Tom Ford set the tone with decadence and danger with sparkling glamour and brazen animal print. Renowned Vogue fashion critic Suzy Menkes – who has been attending and writing about shows for more than two decades – missed the first show of the season because of a delayed flight. She made up for it though by joining Tom Ford at his private client-only event after the show, where the wealthiest women and men bought their new-season wardrobe straight from his show. Menke’s notes that women were “going crazy” to place orders for a cream crocodile, lace and silk, “hard-and-soft” outfit, below (some Instagrammers have been describing the dress to look like “hair from an angel”). It’ll be interesting to see how this will trickle down to the high-street in the coming months, considering the animal-print trend is already a big focus for AW18. We’re sure Menkes’ schedule is surely back on track after a wobbly start to the week.

Irish Editor-in-Chief of Glamour Magazine Samantha Barry sat front row at Tom Ford alongside Eva Chen, director of fashion partnerships at Instagram, Rita Wilson, Tom Hanks, Anna Wintour and Cardi B. Sitting among celebrity and industry big-leads, Barry she set the record straight last night that fair-skinned women can wear bright yellow without looking gaunt or unappealing. She strikes the balance perfectly with a punchy red lip that perfectly emphasizes her auburn locks.

The Man Repeller got Diet Prada’d

This might seem a little cryptic so I’ll slow down a sec: Diet Prada is one of the most feared Instagram accounts in the fashion industry because it exposes corruption, designer imitation, slander, lack of representation, exploitation, sexual harassment, and general unwelcomed behaviour. The account updates its growing community of 718k followers with regular updates on who’s stealing what, who’s threatening who, and who to avoid next. Yesterday’s update was a surprising one. Leandra Medine, founder of Man Repeller, was “outed” for allegedly carbon-copying a design from her new footwear collection from lesser-known label Area. Medine is known for her zeitgeisty approach to trends and frequently reports on them and up-and-coming brands on her website, so it came as a surprise to many to see her be so careless. Reputaion=smudged.

If you follow DP closely, you’ll know we have a major soft spot for NY indie brand @area , so it’s a MAJOR bummer to see @leandramcohen of @manrepeller knock off their signature crystal fringe heels (and at $690…they’re not exactly the look for less). With a strong retro glam/borderline questionable taste kind of vibe since their inception, these shoes in particular have quickly helped them put their own stamp on a seriously over-saturated market…a struggle even for large scale brands. Scroll to the last slide for some serious ????s. • #area #areanyc #manrepeller #leandramedine #shoes #heels #shoesaddict #sandals #crystals #rhinestones #bling #sparkle #glam #retro #disco #fringe #wiwt #ootd #streetstyle #runway #thewebster #dietprada

What has us excited today is Tory Burch’s SS19 catwalk, Jason Wu’s SS19 presentation and Disney Villians X The Blondes catwalk show, who have created looks inspired by Cruella de Vil, Maleficent, Evil Queen, The Queen of Hearts and Ursula, among others. The Blonds, who started their collection in 2007, are known for designing glamorous, over-the-top fashion that caters to the entertainment industry.
