Christmas is just around the corner and even though celebrations will be different this year, we’re still going to let those festive feelings flow. Here are just a few of the Netflix picks we are most looking forward to watching on repeat…
Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey
A musical adventure for the ages, Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey is a wholly fresh and spirited family holiday event. Set in the gloriously vibrant town of Cobbleton, the film follows legendary toymaker Jeronicus Jangle (Forest Whitaker) whose fanciful inventions burst with whimsy and wonder. But when his trusted apprentice (Keegan-Michael Key) steals his most prized creation, it’s up to his equally bright and inventive granddaughter (Madalen Mills) — and a long-forgotten invention — to heal old wounds. Gloriously cheesy, it’s going to be worth a watch.
Holidate
Here we meet Sloane (Emma Roberts) and Jackson (Luke Bracey) hate the holidays. They constantly find themselves single, sitting at the kid’s table, or stuck with awkward dates. But when these two strangers meet one particularly bad Christmas, they make a pact to be each other’s “holidate” for every festive occasion throughout the next year. With a mutual disdain for the holidays, and assuring themselves that they have no romantic interest in the other, they make the perfect team. However, it doesn’t stay that way for long…
Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square
Dolly Parton comes unto us with a Netflix musical Christmas movie, in which she plays an angel. In Christmas on the Square, Dolly intends to warm everyone’s hearts, specifically Christine Baranski’s. Baranski stars as “a rich and nasty woman” named Regina Fuller who “returns to her small hometown after her father’s death to evict everyone and sell the land to a mall developer — right before Christmas. You just know that Dolly’s going to save the day.
The Christmas Chronicles Part Two
Kate Pierce, now a cynical teen, is unexpectedly reunited with Santa Claus when a mysterious troublemaker threatens to cancel Christmas … forever. Goldie Hawn, Kurt Russell, Christmas magic – what more could you ask for?
The only festive offering of the bunch, sees us get a behind-the-scenes glimpse at our favourite Christmas films. Unwrap, if you will, the real stories behind some of the most iconic Christmas blockbusters including Elf thanks to insider interviews and behind-the-scenes peeks.
The Holiday
Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz trade places in this hugely popular, festive heartwarmer. Frequently cited a ‘chick-flick’ like it’s a bad thing – films created for women by a woman is never a bad thing IMO – and writer/director Nancy Meyers’ script is on sparkling form.
A Very Murray Christmas
I’ll never understand why this one doesn’t get more appreciation – it’s Bill Murray people. Directed by Sofia Coppola, the great Bill Murray fronts a Christmas variety show inspired by old-school American holiday specials. The film focuses on Murray and his Christmas cabaret, but as luck would have it, weather prevents guests from attending. The celebrity cameos are brilliant, from Miley Cyrus and George Clooney, plus, of course, a whole lot of singing and dancing. It’s quirky, fun and well worth a watch.
