4 comfortable and quaint cottages in the West of Ireland for under €200,000

Thinking about putting down roots in Clare, Galway, Mayo, Sligo or Leitrim? These four cottages for sale in the West of Ireland are ready to move into and have plenty of original charm.

There is something so pleasing about a quaint country cottage. Roaring fires, exposed beams, low ceilings and imperfect walls are all part of their charm.

However, they’re not always easy to renovate. Typically built to be breathable with a lime rendering, a number of modern insulating techniques can actually do damage to old stone walls and without plasterboard to tuck wiring behind, internal fixings are tricky.

Luckily, these four cottages for sale in the West of Ireland are turnkey ready so no awkward work required.

Tawley, Cliffoney, Co Leitrim
€200,000

Located along Leitrim’s sliver of coastline and just a short distance from big wave surf spot Mullaghmore is this lovely stone cottage. It’s officially a one-bedroom with the master located on the ground floor, but the loft area has been converted into a comfortable space for guests to stay too and is accessible by a spiral staircase.

The bijou kitchen has timber units and a Belfast sink, while a solid fuel stove in the old hearth is really the centre of the home. The exposed walls, timber beams really make this place feel so cosy while it’s clearly been well-loved and lived in by its current owners.

Cahermurphy, Kilmihil, Co Clare
€125,000

This traditional stone cottage has been beautifully restored and is now a three-bedroom home. Keeping much of its original features, including the two sets of stairs that access two different loft bedrooms, it has a large fireplace original to the building. Off the sweet little kitchen is a small conservatory with its own healthy grape wine and views over the one-acre site.

Not far from Doonbeg beach, the site also boasts a polytunnel to grow your own veggies, along with a number of outbuildings.

Caher, Kiltimagh, Co Mayo
€129,000

This three-bedroom thatched cottage is due up for auction on November 19 here.  Despite its rural location its only about ten minutes’ from Knock Airport, so there are some useful transport links nearby.

Sitting on about four acres of land it’s got plenty of old-world charm with exposed beams and beautiful timer flooring as well as a stone fireplace.

Holly Cottage, Headford, Co Galway
€195,000

Another thatched cottage, these two in Galway were built in the 18th and 19th centuries. Now connected by a small portico to create one surprisingly large house, it has been beautifully maintained and modernised.

The now-four-bedroom cottage has a large open-plan feel downstairs centring on the staircase up to the loft bedrooms. There’s also a large stone fireplace and Cathedral timber ceilings throughout. The house has a south-facing rear garden too, with a patio and mature trees.
