Colourful splashbacks to convince you to go bright in your kitchen

Colourful splashbacks to convince you to go bright in your kitchen

Even if the rest of your space is neutral, a splashback is a great opportunity to add some colour to your kitchen.

The heart of the modern home, our kitchens really have to work hard. Not only are they the place where we prepare and enjoy our meals, open-plan designs mean that we seem to spend more and more time in them as they merge into our living spaces.

From chatting over coffee to the kids’ homework space, you might find yourself spending a large chunk of your time in the kitchen, and so people often go for neutral shades to ensure their space fits all these many needs.

However, a splashback is a great opportunity to add bold colour to your kitchen, and as it doesn’t cover a large area, there’s no danger of it feeling like ‘too much’. Here are eight kitchens to inspire you.

Sunshine yellow

This otherwise navy and white kitchen is immediately brightened with a splash of yellow on the wall. The irregularities in these tiles add a depth to the colour, and help it feel layered rather than flat.

Green with envy

The varying shades of green in these tiles make for a rich spectrum of colour in this kitchen. Contrasting beautifully with the deep blue units, the brick pattern they have been laid in also adds interest.

Pretty in pink

If you want your space to feel calm, but want to go with something more interesting than white, why not go for tiles and a paint colour in a similar shade? This consistency is calming to the eye, while your choice of colour will still add personality.

Play with pattern

Tiles with delicate patterns may seen old fashioned, but they can be made to feel modern with the right touch. In this kitchen, Delft tiles form a pretty backsplash for an Aga, while the rest of the kitchen is kept relatively simple.

Multi-tonal

A backsplash can act as not only a way to add colour to your space, but the starting point for your whole kitchen palette, as seen in this bright design. The repetition of the same colours throughout also makes the space feel very cohesive.

Go geometric

Combine bold colour with striking shapes for an even more impactful look in your kitchen. These diamond-shaped tiles combine to form geometric shapes, and their dark shade would contrast well with pale neutrals.

Black out

If you’re committed to your colour scheme, then a splashback can simply provide another chance to include your main shade, in this case a deep, almost-black tone.

Think outside the box

This design from Kingston Lafferty Design proves that you don’t have to place tiles exactly where you’d expect in a kitchen. This cooking space is framed by the jewel-toned tiles that extend above your head as you cook.
