Reese Witherspoon officially confirms that Legally Blonde 3 is under way
Almost 20 years after the original, iconic Legally Blonde movie came to theatres, Legally Blonde 3 has been confirmed and is currently in the works.
Many of us adored Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) when we first met her in her debut film, doused in pink and sparkles with trusty, bedazzled Bruiser at her side.
We couldn’t help but cheer her on as she took on Harvard Law School, disproving an archaic blonde stereotype and gloriously making a fool of Warner Huntington (Sleazeball) III.
Of course, one of the movie’s legendary moments was when Elle joined forces with Vivian, her previous rival, in a refreshing display of female support that is usually absent from most rom-coms.
Legally Blonde even went on to become a hit musical with seven Tony nominations, so a film sequel was inevitable.
Elle continued her journey in Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde when she headed to Washington D.C. to pass a ban on animal testing.
And now we can’t wait to see what she does next.
The writers
Reese Witherspoon recently took to Instagram to announce the big screen news, revealing that the new script is being co-written by award-winning writers Mindy Kaling (The Office and The Mindy Project) and Dan Goor (Brooklyn 99 and Parks and Rec).
“Elle Woods is so iconic,” Kaling said, “proving you can be girly and smart at the same time. Bend and snap people!”
The third movie’s plot specifics have yet to be announced, but we do know that it will continue Elle’s empowering journey.
Returning Cast
However, Witherspoon did hint at a few film possibilities in an interview late last year with The Hollywood Reporter.
“Legally Blonde 3 is going to be so much fun. So full of fashion. So full of awesome feminist ideas. It will be global. It will have animals. It will have returning cast members.
“We just need to film it first. But that’s my hope and dream for Legally Blonde 3. It will be the return of Jennifer Coolidge, which is the greatest.”
A release date has yet to be announced, so stay tuned for more bend-and-snappery to come your way.
