Proving you don’t need a huge budget to live in a home full of period charm.
It’s easy to admire the beauty of period homes, whether it’s the high ceilings of a Georgian home or the rustic charm of an old farmhouse. However, we often think that these features come with a high price tag.
This doesn’t have to be the case, though, as these three homes prove. Each has plenty of interesting period features, all for €395,000 and under.
8 North William Street, Dublin 1, €345,000
This charming mid-terrace home’s period features are noticeable even from the outside, with a fan light above the door, a sash window, and decorative brickwork detailing. Inside, the living room has perhaps the most characteristic features, with a wonderfully high ceiling and large window.
There is also a kitchen, dining room and two bedrooms, with a small yard to the rear. This home is within a short walk of the city centre, as well as the popular Fairview park.
Derryoran, Whitegate, Clare, €275,000
Built over 100 years ago, this farmhouse has been carefully cared for, without losing its gorgeous rustic features. A renovation in 2020 added features like underfloor heating and extra insulation, but beautiful exposed stone walls have been retained, and new double glazed windows are true to the original sash style.
Upstairs there are two bedrooms, one with its own fireplace, while outside there are two traditional stone outbuildings. The house sits on almost two acres of land, and accessed by a forestry road it is guaranteed to be peaceful. It’s also less than an hour’s drive from Limerick city.
The Old Rectory, Church Hill Ballyhooly, Cork, €395,000
The most expensive of our homes is this gorgeous four-bed house. It has period details throughout such as floor tiling, ceiling coving, and shuttered sash windows. Some rooms require a little refurbishment but overall it seems in good condition.
It’s located close to the centre of Mallow, as well as several parks and the River Blackwater, while Cork city is just over half an hour’s drive.
