There’s nothing like the announcement of imminent inter-county travel that has us itching to get moving, so my current obsession is adorable cottages with nothing but green fields and rolling hills around them.
Were I to live in such a home, I tell myself, my daily walks would be populated with a sense of wonder and serenity thanks to my bucolic surroundings. I would return home to the fireside, and perhaps work on my knitting for the afternoon. (I would need to first learn how to knit).
And as these three houses at €100,000 or under prove, it’s not a totally impossible dream, either.
This two-bedroom cottage is larger than it looks from the outside, with a well-sized living room and kitchen. Although a new owner may wish to modernise it, it’s in good condition inside, and I particularly like the cheerfully-painted kitchen.
Around 15 minutes’ drive from Castlebar, it is also surrounded by beautiful landscape, with Levallinree Lough very close by. Derryhick Lough, Lough Conn and the River Moy are also in the area.
This beautiful cut stone home is thought to date back to the 1800s. Originally built as two cottages, it is now one residence, and is quite large, with two living rooms and four bedrooms.
Inside the building needs a lot of work, (and a lot of pine panelling removed) but this presents a great opportunity to reconfigure the space. A new owner might wish to create a more open plan layout on the ground floor, opening up the small kitchen and combining the two living spaces. It is also set in idyllic surroundings, overlooking Farnham Estate.
This sweet little cottage has three bedrooms, although the condition of the interior is unclear, as photos have not been provided.
However, it has the benefit of its surrounding land, some of which has been nicely planted as a garden, while to the side it has been used to grow vegetables. There is also a yard area to the rear with several outbuildings. It is less than 20 minutes’ drive to Tipperary Town, and around 50 minutes to Limerick.
