As we transition into the colder months, it’s the perfect time to think about how to make your home feel ready for the season. Homesense décor partner and interiors enthusiast Susan Darley shares five simple ways to update your space.

Autumn has most definitely arrived, and while some will mourn the arrival of darker evenings and colder mornings, true interiors lovers will know it’s the perfect opportunity to give their home a seasonal refresh, making it feel welcoming and cosy: the perfect place to retreat to.

Susan Darley knows a thing or two about creating beautiful spaces. The creative mind behind @roombyroomdublin with a keen eye for design and a love for DIY projects, she is full of ideas on how to turn your home into a stylish sanctuary. We’ve asked Susan for some tips on transitioning your home from summer to autumn, with the help of Homesense.

As part of the TK Maxx family, Homesense is the perfect place to pick up unique finds, quality pieces, and statement styles for your home, all at up to 60% less than the RRP. With fresh deliveries every week, you never know what you might discover.

Dark wood

While pale wood tones are perfect for a breezy summer space, switch out wooden accessories for dark-toned pieces to create a cosy mood. “Think beautifully grained stools or a rustic pestle and mortar,” Susan says, “these pieces emphasise the beauty of natural materials.”

Some people worry about matching all the wood in their home to the same tone, but a mix of wood colours will actually create a much more layered, interesting space. The drama of darker wood adds a rich, luxurious mood, whether it’s in a piece of furniture, or smaller accessories – you’ll find both at Homesense, as their range encompasses everything from furniture to throws and cushions, to decorative pieces, and bedding.

Earthy tones

If you want to update your home, look to earthy tones to create a welcoming but restful look. “This season’s palette is all about warm, natural hues like olive green, terracotta, and rich browns,” Susan explains.

Whether painted on the wall or incorporated through smaller touches such as cushions and vases, these are colours that are easy to pair together, so mix and match hues to give a layered look. With an unparalleled selection of homeware, you’re sure to find your perfect combination at Homesense.

Textural elements

One of the most important aspects of creating a cosy space is a curated collection of textures. “These layers create a sense of inviting luxury,” Susan says, “and make your space feel extra cosy.” Textiles are hugely important here – mix plush throws and cushions with those in a tighter weave to create contrast – but don’t forget about other materials too.

The beautiful natural grain of wood, the veining of marble or the tactile surface of a lamp base or vase all add different textures to a room, and it is the contrast between them that ultimately creates a beautifully layered space.

Tone-on-tone decor

A simple way to add “subtle sophistication,” Susan says, is to repeat the same tone in your space across multiple elements. Not only does this create a cohesive look, it’s also incredibly calming. Without multiple colours competing for attention, the space feels harmonious and restful.

Try picking something already in your space, such as a sofa or rug and look for other elements in the same shade. Homesense is the perfect place to search for treasures, and you never have to compromise on quality or style.

Unique Pieces

Lastly, don’t be afraid of pieces that are a bit different. We’ve all seen cookie-cutter homes on social media that look nice, but ultimately bland. Your home should be a reflection of you – as Susan says, “infuse your home with personality: unexpected pieces add character and charm!”

Because both Homesense stores in Cork and Dublin are filled of different finds, and with fresh deliveries throughout the week, it is the perfect place to pick up pieces you won’t see everywhere else. You’re bound to find something that speaks to your personal style.

From everyday essentials to perfect gifts, and even that comfy statement chair you didn’t know you needed, Homesense is the ultimate destination for all things home. With locations in Blanchardstown and Cork, Homesense is your go-to for stylish home updates and thoughtful gifts. Follow Homesense on Instagram @homesense_ie.
