Actor Simon Rex was once offered $70,000 to lie about his relationship with Meghan Markle

Actor Simon Rex was once offered $70,000 to lie about his relationship with Meghan Markle

The two had previously worked together on the show ‘Cuts’ back in 2005.

It’s rare a day goes by without at least one new headline about the Duchess of Sussex and today is no different, with the daily offering coming courtesy of Meghan Markle’s former co-star, Simon Rex, who claims that he was once offered a substantial amount of money to fabricate a fake relationship with her.

According to the actor, who starred alongside Markle in an episode of Cuts back in 2005, British tabloids were willing to pay him up to $70,000 to lie and say that he had slept with her after photos of the two having lunch together were circulated online. Rex, however, declined the offer.

Retweeting a post from another account that included an excerpt from an interview he did with The Guardian earlier this month, the Scary Movie star said that his and Markle’s off-screen interactions never went any further than one platonic lunch. “I was broke as f*ck! I really needed the money,” he laughed. “But I’ll be on food stamps before I do that.”

Word eventually got back to Meghan about the offer and she was so touched that Rex had declined the money that she actually penned him a hand-written thank you note for standing his ground. “She said: ‘It’s nice to know there are still good people.’,” Rex recalled, adding, “She has very nice penmanship btw.” The actor later admitted that he has the letter framed in his home out in Joshua Tree.

This isn’t the first time that Rex has addressed the rumour that he was asked to create a fictional relationship with Markle though and he previously spoke about it two years ago when he was a guest on the Hollywood Raw podcast

Asked his thoughts about Prince Harry and Markle stepping back from royal duties because he had “dated her for a hot second”, the actor was quick to set the record straight and responded by saying, “Well, I’ll clear it up. It wasn’t really dating her.

“We hung out one time because we did a TV show together and nothing happened. We never even kissed. It was just like we hung out once in a very non-dating way, but you know how word can get spun into ‘We dated.’ She was just someone I met on a TV show and we got lunch. That was the extent of it, but it looked like it could be that we were dating. But nothing happened, just to be clear.

“It’s funny, because the tabloids actually when that story broke, a couple of British tabloids offered to pay me a lot of money to say a lie that we actually hooked up,” he continued. “And dude, I said no to a lot of money because I didn’t feel right lying and f*cking up the royal f*cking family.

“I just said the truth, which was basically like, ‘Yeah, we hung out one time and got a bite to eat and nothing happened,’ and took a lot less money for that,” he said. “I didn’t feel right doing it.”

If that isn’t proof that you shouldn’t believe everything you read in the tabloids, then I don’t know what is.
