August Gig Guide: The best live acts to see this month

August Gig Guide: The best live acts to see this month

by Sarah Gill
10th Aug 2024

From Imelda May and girl in red to Coldplay, Pixies, and Niall Horan, the live music calendar for August has a little something for everyone…

Daniel O’Donnell

12 August, Bord Gáis Energy Theatre, tickets here

Wee Daniel is bringing a very special show to the Bord Gáis that will see him take a look back on his legendary recording and touring career to date. A fantastic family day out, he’ll be performing all the hits, and it’s highly likely that there won’t be a dry eye in the house once ‘Danny Boy’ begins.

TV Girl

15 August, 3Arena, tickets here

The hypnotic pop sound of TV Girl is goosebump-inducing, simple as. The three-piece have woven together influences ranging from ‘60s pop to soulful hip hop with electronic samples and dreamy vocal layers.

Niall Horan

23&24 August, Royal Hospital Kilmainham, tickets here

Niall Horan has been touring his The Show set for what seems like an eternity, and Dublin is getting not one but two encores at Royal Hospital Kilmainham after a run of sold-out shows back in February. Rumour has it he performs ‘Stockholm Syndrome’ from his One Direction days, so prepare for a throwback.

James Blunt

24 August, National Museum of Ireland, Collins Barracks, tickets here

Taking place as part of the Wider Than Pictures series of gigs at the National Museum of Ireland, James Blunt will be performing ‘You’re Beautiful’ in Dublin and that’s really all that matters in life. Naturally, his catalogue has many, other tunes—as is evidenced by his greatest hits album, which he has playfully dubbed The Greatest Hit And Songs I Wish You’d Heard.

Gossip

27 August, National Museum of Ireland, Collins Barracks, tickets here

Another incredible act appearing as part of Wider Than Pictures 2024, Gossip’s punk-disco-pop-R’n’B mish mash sound is addictive, and with highlights like ‘Standing in the Way of Control’ to look forward to, it’s going to be one hell of a show. Plus, support on the night is coming from Sprints and Nation of Language, so get ready to jump around.

Imelda May

27 August, Abbey Theatre, tickets here

For one night only, acclaimed singer songwriter, poet and actor Imelda May will read the poetry and prose of Lady Gregory, and will perform songs and stories that marry well with each spoken word piece chosen.

girl in red

27 August, 3Arena, tickets here

Norwegian alt-pop superstar girl in red is bringing her Doing It Again Tour to Dublin, much to the delight of her many adoring fans. Having been selected as one of the support acts for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, this artist’s merits are well documented. From the viral hit, ‘we fell in love in october’, to collaborations with Sabrina Carpenter and official Talking Heads covers, the catalogue is stacked.

Pixies

27&29 August, Galway Airport and the RDS, tickets here

A bucket list band to see live in concert, Pixies have not one but two Irish dates coming up, and they’re enlisting two of the hottest homegrown bands of the moment—NewDad in Galway, Sprints in Dublin—to open their shows. Pioneers of the ‘loudquietloud’ sound, seeing ‘Where Is My Mind?’ live could cure me personally.

Coldplay

29 August—2 September, Croke Park, tickets here

The Music Of The Spheres World Tour is coming to Dublin’s Croke Park for four whole nights of pure magic. Support on the night will be coming from Lucan’s very own Aby Coulibaly, who told IMAGE earlier this month that the honour “hasn’t even sunk in yet”, and that it’s a career highlight for sure.
