The ceremony drew attention this year for the diverse range of nominees (after an overhaul prompted by last year’s lineup which saw no people of colour nominated in the acting categories nor any women in the directing category). That changed this year, with nominations for Nomadland and Rocks, followed by The Father, Mank, Minari and Promising Young Woman, all of which had six.
And this was reflected in the winners from Yuh-Jung Youn, who stole hearts in Minari and Daniel Kaluuya for his charismatic portrayal of Black Panther leader Fred Hampton, in Judas and the Black Messiah, who won best supporting actor. There was also a script and outstanding British film win for Emerald Fennell’s Promising Young Women and a hugely deserved best director win for Nomadland‘s Chloé Zhao, nicely slotting her into Oscar frontrunner territory. The lauded movie also took away the gong for best film.
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom also emerged as the big winner on the opening night of the awards on Saturday. The film about trailblazing blues singer Ma Rainey, played by Viola Davis, scooped two gongs – costume design and hair and make-up
