With the festive decorations packed away, it’s time to turn our thoughts to brighter days. These nature-inspired homeware pieces will help you along, even when spring still feels far away.
January can be an odd time when it comes to picking a mood for our homes. While for the whole month of December we embrace cosiness in all its forms, we often crave freshness for the new year.
And while the weather outside dictates that we don’t pack away our warm throws just yet, bringing some natural tones and textures into your home can help it to feel fresh, while the added tactility they bring keeps things warm and interesting.
Here are some homeware pieces with a nod to the natural world to help begin to move towards a new season.
Wool is a perfect material for this in-between season, still providing much-needed cosiness on chilly days, while the brown shade of this cushion cover will work with a range of colour schemes, adding warmth. Its knitted texture is particularly tactile, too.
This gorgeous lampshade is the natural shade of its natural material, rice paper. This, paired with the delicate lines provided by its wire structure, make it a simple yet interesting addition to a room, and will work well with other calm neutrals.
Made by hand by Belfast ceramicist Derek Wilson, these tumblers are inspired by the rugged Irish coastline, and so are a perfect way to bring its beauty into your home. They are made from grey grogged stoneware with a coloured slip that comes in four colours: moss, sand, blue and grey.
With a base made from brown terracotta and a linen shade, the organic shape of this lamp will add a softness to any room. Its light will also be a welcome addition on these still-dark evenings.
It seems like we’re always looking for more storage, so a basket is always handy to have around. This one (pictured bottom right), is also made from braided jute and banana fibre to give a beautiful two-tone effect.
Prints are lovely on a wall, but they can feel a little flat when hung alone. Painted by hand for a unique finish, this gorgeous plate comes with a mount so it can be hung on a wall, which will allow you to mix things up a bit.
This handcrafted pot invites you to touch its undulations as you walk past. Its pale shade will work with any colour scheme, and once it has a green plant inside it, it’s guaranteed to add freshness to your space.
It doesn’t get much more natural than these handcrafted bowls from Leitrim-based woodturner Roy Humphreys. The raw edge on each is a reminder of the magnificent trees they were made from, which in this case are native ash or alder.
