Bring a taste of Spain to your table with this easy prawns pil pil recipe

Want to bring a taste of Spain to your dinner table? Then try this simple prawns pil pil recipe.

There’s something undeniably special about Spanish cuisine – the bold flavours, the vibrant colours and the way every dish seems to bring people together around the table. It’s food made for long, leisurely meals, where conversation flows as easily as the wine and every bite is packed with warmth and tradition.

One of the most beloved Spanish tapas dishes is prawns pil pil; a sizzling, garlicky prawn dish infused with a gentle heat from fresh chilli and balanced by the sweetness of cherry tomatoes. Served with crispy crostini for dipping, it’s a dish made for sharing whether you’re hosting a tapas night or simply looking to bring a taste of Spain into your kitchen.

Even better, it’s easy to make too. There are no complicated techniques, just fresh ingredients coming together to create something delicious. In just a few steps, you can have a vibrant, flavour-packed dish on the table, ready to be enjoyed with a glass of Spanish wine.

To celebrate SuperValu’s Spanish Wine & Food Event, Chef Gareth Mullins has crafted this easy yet impressive recipe using SuperValu Signature Tastes Large King Prawns, ensuring top-quality ingredients and flavour in every bite.

Prawns pil pil with crusty baguette

Prep time: 30 mins
Cook time: 15 mins
Serves: 3-4

Ingredients

  • SuperValu Signature Tastes Large King Uncooked Prawns
  • 2 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 1 red chilli, chopped
  • 10 cherry tomatoes, quartered
  • 50ml olive oil
  • 1 lemon
  • Chopped coriander
  • 1 baguette

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 170°C. Slice the baguette into 1cm-thick pieces at an angle to make crostini. Arrange on a tray, drizzle with olive oil, season to taste and bake for 6-8 minutes until crisp and golden brown.
  2. Heat a pan over medium heat and add the olive oil. Add the garlic and chilli, cooking for 2 minutes until fragrant.
  3. Stir in the cherry tomatoes and fry for another 2 minutes, allowing them to soften slightly.
  4. Add the SuperValu Signature Tastes Large King Uncooked Prawns and cook for 2 minutes, turning them until they turn pink and are cooked through.
  5. Finish with chopped coriander and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice for brightness.
  6. Serve immediately with the crispy crostini for dipping.

Perfect pairing

A glass of Abellio Albariño, with its crisp citrus notes and delicate minerality, complements the garlicky, spicy richness of the prawns beautifully, enhancing every bite.
