Donald Glover’s Mr & Mrs Smith reboot and a new cinema release – what to watch this week

Looking for something new to watch? This week's picks include Donald Glover's new Mr & Mrs Smith reboot and an all-star cinema release.

Monday, January 29

Bottoms, Prime Video

Directed by Emma Seligman, starring Rachel Sennott and honorary Irish actor Ayo Edebiri, Bottoms tells the story of two unpopular queer high-school students who start a fight club to have sex before graduation. Your classic coming-of-age tale.

Tuesday, January 30

Jack Whitehall: Settle Down, Netflix

Jack Whitehall takes to the stage at London’s O2 Arena to riff on dogs, drinking, dining alone and finally deciding to settle down and become a father.

Wednesday, January 31

Choir, Disney+

Choir is a 6-part documentary series following the kids of the Detroit Youth Choir as they prepare for the performance of a lifetime. Through their eyes, we experience the highs and lows of life growing up in Detroit, navigating the challenges of balancing family, school, and athletics, all while pursuing their dreams of taking their talents to the next level and performing on one of the world’s biggest stages. Following their 2019 appearance on America’s Got Talent, it’s a pivotal time for the choir and its director, Anthony White, as he’s faced with the combined challenges of replacing several key members, keeping the choir relevant in Detroit, and finding the next big opportunity that will put them back in the national spotlight.

Sive, Gaiety Theatre

One of Ireland’s most celebrated plays, John B Keane’s classic masterpiece is a must-see. Set in 1950s Ireland and featuring a celebrated ensemble cast, Sive is the story of a young and beautiful orphan. While living with her aunt and uncle, a local matchmaker schemes for Sive to marry a much older man. Her resentful and greedy family agree to the arrangement despite Sive being in love with someone else. Faced with an unthinkable future, she takes back her control in the only way she knows how. Tickets start at €20 including booking fee and are on sale now from ticketmaster.ie.

Argylle, in cinemas nationwide

From the twisted mind of Matthew Vaughn comes Argylle, a reality-bending, globe-encircling spy thriller starring Henry Cavil, John Cena, Ariana DeBose, Dua Lipa, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara and Samuel L Jackson amongst others. Bryce Dallas Howard is Elly Conway, the reclusive author of a series of best-selling espionage novels, whose idea of bliss is a night at home with her computer and her cat, Alfie. But when the plots of Elly’s fictional books – which centre on secret agent Argylle and his mission to unravel a global spy syndicate – begin to mirror the covert actions of a real-life spy organisation, quiet evenings at home become a thing of the past. I’ll be honest, this doesn’t look great but the stellar cast could be its saving grace.

Saturday, February 3

Mr & Mrs Smith, Prime Video

Two lonely strangers land a job working for a mysterious spy agency that offers them a glorious life of espionage, wealth, world travels and a dream brownstone in Manhattan. The catch: new identities in an arranged marriage as Mr. & Mrs. John and Jane Smith. Now hitched, John and Jane navigate a high-risk mission every week while also facing a new relationship milestone. Their complex cover story becomes even more complicated when they catch real feelings for each other. What’s riskier, espionage or marriage? Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane star.

Sunday, February 4

The Edge of Love, Disney+

The Edge of Love is a 2008 British biographical romantic drama film directed by John Maybury. A beautifully drawn love story, the film revolves around two feisty, free-spirited women, Caitlin Thomas(Sienna Miller) and Vera Killick (Keira Knightley), Vera’s husband William Killick (Cillian Murphy) and the brilliant, charismatic poet Dylan Thomas (Matthew Rhys) who loves both women. By no means a biopic in the traditional vein, the story explores the collision of the bohemian underworld of war-torn London and the intimate complexities of two young couples whose lives and loves become dangerously intertwined.
