‘Euphoria’ star Maude Apatow was a huge One Direction fangirl, and we have her dad to thank for the footage.
Jimmy Fallon has a way of getting people on his side – he’s not one of the world’s most popular talk show hosts for nothing. Viewers love him, he’s always a hit with his famous interviewees and his show largely manages to sidestep the awkward celeb encounters we’ve seen elsewhere on the internet.
In fact, he’s so good at his job that he’s even managed to swindle unseen footage off some of his guests’ friends and family members before. Take the time he had Taylor Swift on The Tonight Show back in 2019. Asking Taylor “can you see me by the way?”, the singer gave a hesitant, “Uh, yeah”, before the nature of Fallon’s questioning became clear. Probing her on her recent lasik eye surgery – a procedure she had not told the public about – Taylor grew increasingly confused until Fallon revealed that Swift’s own mother had provided him with a video of her acting “a little loopy” post-surgery.
“Your mom may or may not have videotaped you after surgery… and she gave us the video,” he told Swift, who responded by saying, “For the television?!” Yes, Taylor, for the television.

Well, Fallon struck gold again recently when he had Euphoria star Maude Apatow on to join him. The eldest daughter of filmmaker Judd Apatow and actress Leslie Mann, Maude has been establishing herself as a talented actress in her own right. Obviously keen to discuss her role in the second season of the popular HBO original, Fallon had something different in mind and it wasn’t long before he surprised her with old footage of her as a One Direction-obsessed teenager. The sender? Her doting dad.
Maude kind of walked herself into it though. Last on the show alongside her father, she explained that the whole thing was “very embarrassing” for her as she arrived to set straight off the plane, looked “disgusting” and immediately ran into Harry Styles who was hosting SNL just one floor up. Cut to her rushing back to the dressing room and breaking down in floods of tears because she was so overwhelmed.
That wasn’t actually the first encounter she’d had with Styles either – she actually got to interview him and his fellow bandmates for Teen Vogue back in 2014. “I had a popular Twitter page when I was like 13 and I decided I wanted to become a child journalist and they [Teen Vogue] asked me to interview One Direction on their first trip to America… it was like the scariest thing in my life,” she admitted.
“I couldn’t even say words. Like, they weren’t coming out,” she laughed. The trip down memory lane didn’t stop there and next up was a video of Maude in the elevator after seeing the boys in concert. No, not standing up, but sitting on the ground… crying, again. “Maude, you’re fine,” her little sister Iris can be heard scoffing.

In classic dad fashion, Judd saw the opportunity to bring his daughter’s rising star power back down to earth and jumped at it. No doubt she went straight home and banned him from ever talking to the media (or anyone?) ever again. We wouldn’t blame her if she did – imagine running into any of the 1D boys after that was put out on the internet? Oh, the horror of it all.
