We’ve finally got a first look at the highly anticipated big screen adaptation of Amy Liptrot’s best-selling memoir, The Outrun.
In the cinematic still, we see a turquoise-haired Saoirse Ronan gazing off a high-rise balcony in deep contemplation. In the light of the early morning sky, the remnants of last night’s glitter can be seen clinging to her skin, and the image instantly piques your interest.
For those otherwise unaware, The Outrun is a memoir written by Amy Liptrot published in December of 2018 that went on to become a hugely popular best-seller. Winning the 2016 Wainwright Prize, the 2017 PEN Ackerley Prize, and becoming a Sunday Times top 10 best-seller, the book was translated into 15 languages, sold over 110,000 copies in the UK alone, and was added by publisher Canongate to its modern classics list, The Canons.
According to the memoir’s Amazon description, Amy Liptrot found herself washed up back home on Orkney at the age of thirty. “Standing unstable on the island, she tries to come to terms with the addiction that has swallowed the last decade of her life. As she spends her mornings swimming in the bracingly cold sea, her days tracking Orkney’s wildlife, and her nights searching the sky for the Merry Dancers, Amy discovers how the wild can restore life and renew hope, anchor us and set us free,” the description reads.
Academy Award nominee Saoirse Ronan will take on the role of Rona in the big screen adaptation, IMDb’s official summary of the film says that as her character “reconnects with the dramatic landscape where she grew up, memories of her childhood merge with the more recent challenging events that have set her on the path to recovery.”
The project is in the capable hands of director Nora Fingscheidt, who directed System Crasher in 2019 and has since worked with Sandra Bullock and Viola Davis on The Unforgivable. Liptrot lent a hand in adapting the novel for the big screen. The feature was optioned by producer Sarah Brocklehurst, and is also being produced by Ronan’s newly founded banner Arcade Pictures alongside Jack Lowden and Dominic Norris. They are joined by co-producers Jonas Weydemann and Jakob D. Weydemann of Weydemann Bros, and Shirin Hartmann.
While we have not been given a first-look still from Saoirse Ronan’s co-stars as of yet, Paapa Essiedu (I May Destroy You) and Stephen Dillane (Alex Rider, Game of Thrones) are credited on IMDb.
Set for release in 2023, you’ve got plenty of time to read Amy Liptrot’s 2015 memoir before the adaptation hits theatres.
