As evenings grow darker and the weather becomes unpredictable, its4women reminds us that it’s more important than ever to stay vigilant, whatever the journey.

The winter season means there are more reasons to be on the road, whether you’re on the hunt for gifts, heading abroad for some winter sun, or simply on the school run. That’s why we’ve asked the experts at its4women car insurance for helpful tips for the season ahead.

Check your tyres regularly

Your tyres are your first line of defence on icy roads. Ensure that your tyre tread depth is at least 3mm and check tyre pressure regularly. The recommended tyre pressure for your vehicle is usually printed in the sill of the driver’s door, inside the fuel tank flap, or in your vehicle handbook.

Use your lights effectively

Make sure you know the switches that operate the rear fog lamps (and front fog lamps if they are fitted). Park up and look at all your different light options: Parking or side lights for dark days, dipped headlights for busy streets at night, brights for unlit roads, and fog lights for when visibility is less than 100 metres. Check for any dead bulbs and don’t forget to look at the rear lights, too.

Keep your windows clear

Condensation and frost can reduce visibility, especially during early-morning commutes. A kettle of boiling hot water on your windscreen can damage the glass, so use lukewarm water or de-icing spray instead. Make sure your washer fluid is topped up and always keep a scraper and de-icer in your car.

Prepare for emergencies

In the event of a breakdown or accident, having the right equipment can be a lifesaver. Keep a kit in your car, including items like a high-visibility jacket, torch, blanket, portable phone charger, water and snacks. These essentials can help you and your passengers stay safe while waiting for assistance.

Maintain a safe distance

Safe stopping distances increase significantly in wet, icy conditions. In fact, stopping distances can be ten times greater in ice and snow than on dry roads. Always leave extra space between your car and the vehicle in front of you, as this gives you more time to react if they suddenly stop or skid.
