In the market for a fixer-upper? Sure, they require more TLC than other properties, but the pay-off of seeing your dream home come together is worth it in the end.

Buying a house ready for move-in would save you a world of hassle, but sometimes half the fun is in the glow-up. It’s not often pretty (nor is it cheap), but the satisfaction of seeing something substandard become something truly special cannot be underestimated.

Some of these properties only need a fresh coat of paint or some new flooring, others, however, require much more work, so it’s important to keep in mind just how much you’re willing to take on. Below are four fixer-uppers around the country – all under the €195,000 mark – that could use a little love, but have plenty of potential.

Knockananny, Garranard, Ballina, Co Mayo, €105,000

A two-bed stone cottage located in Co Mayo, this property will need a complete overhaul to bring it up to scratch.

A charming cottage surrounded by nature and with an abundance of potential, there are also a number of farm sheds to the rear of the property. The cottage is situated on approximately 1.4 acres of land and the sale includes circa 13.5 acres of land which surrounds the property.

Located not far from the small yet lively village of Moygownagh, Knockananny is perfectly situated for those seeking a peaceful retreat with easy access to local amenities which include a school, a shop and a post office.

Glebe, Glenade, Kinlough, Co Leitrim, €140,000

Located in a peaceful part of Co Leitrim, this one-bed, one-bath property sits on 1.5 acres of land and would make for an ideal project for those looking to challenge their interior and design skills.

In good condition throughout, the cottage was renovated by its current owners within the last 15 years though slight upgrades will still be needed. Many of the building’s original features remain including a cosy stone fireplace. Double-glazed hardwood windows, a solid fuel stove with back boiler and French doors off the sitting room take advantage of the wonderful panoramic views of the valley below.

Situated within easy access of all amenities in nearby Manorhamilton and Kinlough, there are also many beautiful beaches and attractions in the locality too.

Caherleaheen, Tralee, Co Kerry, €150,000

A little bit of time, money and patience would bring this property to its full potential.

A detached two-bedroom bungalow with gardens to the front and side, this property has huge potential for those willing to dedicate the necessary resources to the project.

Ideally located just 200 metres from the local national school, the property can be found just off the main Tralee/Killorglin road – approximately 3km from Tralee town centre.

Inside, the interior has been well maintained though is in need of modernisation.

Ballykenneally, Ballymacoda, Co Cork, €195,000

This three-bedroom cottage comes to market in relatively good condition, though it is in need of renovation works and modernisation.

Set on approximately 1 acre of lush green land in Ballykenneally, inside the accommodation comprises three bedrooms, a kitchen-cum-dining room, and main bathroom.

Well set up with many local amenities nearby, the property is only a few minutes drive from the scenic Greenlands Strand and the small village of Ballymacoda. The larger towns of Youghal and Midleton are less than 25 mins drive away.
