Ahead of the 95th Academy Awards ceremony on Monday 13 March, you may want to brush up on the catalogues of work produced by the immensely talented contingent of Irish nominees. By now, it’s safe to assume that everyone has seen The Banshees of Inisherin — which has been nominated for a grand total of nine awards — but that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Kerry Condon’s acting career.
Having made her television debut back in 1999 on Ballykissangel alongside Colin Farrell, the pair met again in 2003 on the set of Intermission, a film in which Condon played a waitress who was punched in the face by Farrell’s character.
Playing the role of his character’s sister Siobhán in Banshees, Condon received a shout out from Farrell during his Golden Globes acceptance speech. He said: “Kerry, to finally see the world… after 20 years of acting, find your work now, you’re extraordinary.”
If you’re looking for something to watch this weekend, here are five Kerry Condon films to check out…
Written, directed, and co-produced by Banshee’s Martin McDonagh, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is a darkly comedic drama starring Frances McDormand as a mother hellbent on solving her daughter’s murder case, and Woody Harrelson as the town’s revered chief of police.
Described as a horror/thriller, Bad Samaritan stars Robert Sheehan and Carlito Olivero as two friends who work as valets as they set out to rob their owners’ houses. Things get complicated after Sheehan’s character discovers a woman chained in the house he broke into, and is being held captive by David Tennant.
A hugely beloved Irish classic, Angela’s Ashes is based on the autobiography of Frank McCourt, and follows the experiences of young Frankie and his family as they try to escape the poverty endemic in the slums of pre-war Limerick. Starring Emily Watson, Kerry Condon had her first acting role on the film at the age of 16.
This 2005 action thriller stars Rob Hoskins in the role of a vicious loan shark who uses his bodyguard (Jet Li) to violently attack non-complying customers by controlling him with a metal collar around his neck. However, a chance encounter with a blind man — played by Morgan Freeman — motivates him to leave the criminal world and start a new life.
Starring Margot Robbie and Finn Cole, Dreamland is a love story set amidst America’s struggle during the Great Depression. Described as a beautifully shot coming-of-age story, the film follows Cole’s character as a teen bounty hunter torn between helping or capturing a seductive fugitive bank robber hiding in his small town.
