My Life in Culture: St Patrick’s Day festival director Aoife Carry

As the St Patrick’s Day festival director, Aoife Carry has spent the past few months working behind the scenes on one of the world’s largest celebrations of Irish culture. A seasoned creative with over a decade of international experience in creating magnificent circus and spectacle shows, throughout her career, she’s collaborated with world-renowned theatrical giants such as Cirque Du Soleil, Franco Dragone, and MGM… though there’s nothing so special as being back home.

The last thing I saw and loved… The Whistle II by Darragh McLoughlin.

The book I keep coming back to… The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern.

I find inspiration in… nature and being outdoors.

My favourite film is… this is a really hard question, it depends on my mood. I like films that look beautiful and have great scripts. The Prestige is a great movie for both of these things. But when I’m travelling abroad, I miss the Irish sense of humour, so I’ll watch things like In Bruges.

My career highlight is… I’ve had an extremely fortunate career so far, and I think every job has been a highlight in its own way, but being back working in Ireland is really extra special.

The song I listen to to get in the zone is… I don’t really use music to get in the zone, but when I’m driving late at night, I always listen to I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor by Arctic Monkeys at full blast. That’s my stay awake music.

The last book I recommended is… Falling Animals by Sheila Armstrong.

I never leave the house without… going back to pick up the thing I forgot.

The performance I still think about is… Ophelia’s Got Talent by Florentina Holzinge.

The best advice I’ve ever gotten… is ‘what the mind believes the body can achieve.

The art that means the most to me is… a show that I created myself, Prologue. It means the most to me because I put my heart and soul into its creation and I learned so much about myself as an artist by going through the process.

My favourite thing about the Saint Patrick’s Festival is… the amazing team I get to work with.

The magic of theatre, dancing and singing to me is… the relationship with the audience; we enter into a contract together for a certain period of time, and through that shared experience, neither of us will be the same when our time together is over.
