Don't let the doom, gloom and inevitable antigen tests of January 2022 get you down. Instead escape to the colourful world of these new TV shows

Christmastime is not the only time we’re known for lounging around watching good TV. As the dark and dreary winter months of January and February wrap themselves around us, now is actually a great time for good television. And never more has that been true than of 2022 when TV shows that finally got to film in the summer of 2021 have been edited and are readying for release.

So, if you’re already caught up on A Very British Scandal (if not, get on it ASAP), here’s what else is on the cards both on TV and streaming sites this January 2022.

Return to Hogwarts, Sky MAX
8.05am January 1

By now you’ve seen the heartwarming trailer of this beloved franchise’s cast reunion, where all the members have come back together to meet and reminisce about their days at Hogwarts at the London sets. Getting it almost as soon as it lands on HBO in the US, it’s the perfect start to 2022.

The Tourist, BBC 1
9pm, January 1

Set in the Australian outback, Jamie Dornan stars as a man suffering from complete memory loss after a car crash. Waking up in a hospital bed with no idea who he is yet his past continues to haunt him as a police officer begins to piece together what happened to him and why.

A Discovery of Witches, Sky Atlantic
January 7

One of Sky’s most successful exclusive series, we’re diving into season 3 of A Discovery of Witches, starring Teresa  Palmer and Matthew Goode as witch Diana and vampire Matthew return from their foray to Elizabethan London and back to present-day France to face the repercussions of their elopement and also, the potential arrival of new life.

A binge-worth series that’s guaranteed to have you hooked.

Euphoria, NOW TV
January 9

The already-iconic show is returning sooner than we expected and will certainly as dark, if not darker than the first. We have a trailer but the plot has been kept very much under wraps with creator Sam Levinson known to continue rewriting scripts right the way through filming. However, based on how much the cast has spoken about its brilliance basically all the way through filming, whatever happens, it looks like the sophomore might live up to it’s freshman season.

Cheer, Netflix
January 12

Coming back for a surprise second season after its first was a mega-hit that was riddled with scandals and criminal accusations. Returning to Navarro as their celebrity peaks and COVID-19 hits, the 2020 season proves to be the most challenging coach Monica Aldama as they strive to make it to Daytona once again

The Gilded Age, Sky Atlantic
January 25

Cynthia Nixon has already got her next big gig post-And Just Like That lined up and it looks like a doozy. Written by Julian Fellows of Downton Abbey fame, it’s set in the boom years of 1880s New York when new money culture collides head-first with the ageing aristocracy of old. It centres on a young Marian Brook, played by Louisa Jacobson who moves from rural Pennsylvania to NYC to live with her moneyed aunts (Nixon and the indomitable Christine Baranski.

Cannot wait for this one.

The Afterparty, Apple TV
January 28

A hilarious who-dun-it starring Tiffany Haddish in the Sherlock Holmes-esque police detective tasked with uncovering who killed celebrity Xavier (played by Dave Franco) as an afterparty for his high school reunion as his lavish home. Donnie Walhberg, Ben Schwartz, Ilana Grazer and Zoe Chao also star in this comedy-murder-mystery.

Pam + Tommy, Disney +
February 2

Not technically in January but too good to leave off this list, the highly anticipated Pam + Tommy is coming to Disney + in early February. Starring Lily James and Sebastian Stan as the iconic duo, it’ll be a biographical drama based on the couple’s turbulent relationship following the release of this unauthorised sex tape from their honeymoon.
