Poor Things, Disney+
If you’ve seen The Lobster starring Colin Farrell, then you’ll be familiar with director Yorgos Lanthimos’ leanings toward the absurd and his latest film, Poor Things, is no exception. Emma Stone stars as Bella Baxter, a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation. Co-produced by Irish company Element Pictures, the film is up for a whopping 11 Academy Awards at this year’s ceremony – taking place this Sunday.

The new documentary from Academy Award-winning filmmaker Kevin Macdonald, High & Low centres on the rise and subsequent fall of John Galliano, one of the most widely recognised and successful fashion designers of the 1990s and 2000s.Tracing his career from fashion student to creative director at Givenchy and Dior, the documentary doesn’t shy away from the controversy either and Galliano is candid about his struggles with addiction and the industry pressure he faced along the way. Featuring interviews with Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss and Anna Wintour, it’s a nuanced look at cancel culture and whether redemption is possible or indeed, deserved.
