In the Spring 2021 issue of IMAGE Magazine, we take a look inside one couple’s downsizing dream home in Monkstown. Their handsome early-19th century terraced house is just steps from the sea and has a series of period rooms to the front, with a large renovated space in the rear that was ripe for modernisation.
They got to work on a reconfigured layout where clean lines and minimal clutter was key. While they purged much of their old furniture from the family home where they raised their children, there were a few exceptions. In the relaxed sitting room, which flows into a conservatory and luscious back garden, pride of place is given to their 15-year-old grey B&B Italia sofa. It was bought on eBay for £2,000 when its original owners realised they wouldn’t be able to get it up their stairs. The rest of the space is kept calm and collected, two cord CH25 armchairs are warmed up with an oriental rug and vintage and antique furniture.
Much of the seating in this space contrasts beautifully with its period setting, a modern sofa and footstool juxtapose the mid-century Danish chairs and Oriental rug.
To create a more homely space plenty of natural textures are used, from snuggly sheepskin rugs and rattan elements to knitted cushion covers.
