From cinema blockbusters to binge-worthy series and new TV, here are the best things to stream, watch, or catch in theatres this January.

January 1

The Traitors Season 3, BBC One

The award-winning reality series hosted by Claudia Winkleman is back for a third season with a new group of strangers ready to play the ultimate game of detection, backstabbing and trust… all in the hope of winning up to £120,000. But who will make it through?

Missing You, Netflix 

 

Eleven years ago, Detective Kat Donovan’s fiancé Josh – the love of her life – disappeared and she’s never heard from him since. Now, swiping profiles on a dating app, she suddenly sees his face and her world explodes all over again. Josh’s reappearance forces her to dive back into the mystery surrounding her father’s murder and uncover long-buried secrets from her past.

Lockerbie: A Search for Truth, Sky Atlantic/NOW TV

 

On 21st December 1988, 259 passengers and crew were killed when a Pan Am flight exploded over Lockerbie just 38 minutes after take-off. In the wake of the disaster and his daughter Flora’s death, Dr Jim Swire – played by Colin Firth – is nominated spokesperson for the UK victims’ families, who have united to demand truth and justice. This poignant drama provides an intimate account of a man, a husband, and a father who risks everything in memory of his daughter and the unflinching pursuit of truth and justice.

January 3

Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, Netflix 

From the brilliant Aardman and four-time Academy Award-winning director Nick Park and Emmy Award-nominated Merlin Crossingham comes Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl. In this next installment, Gromit’s concern that Wallace is becoming too dependent on his inventions proves justified, when Wallace invents a “smart” gnome that seems to develop a mind of its own. When it emerges that a vengeful figure from the past might be masterminding things, it falls to Gromit to battle sinister forces and save his master… or Wallace may never be able to invent again!

Nickel Boys, in cinemas nationwide

Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Colson Whitehead, Nickel Boys chronicles the powerful friendship between two young African-American men navigating the harrowing trials of reform school together in Florida.

January 7

Jerry Springer: Fights, Camera, Action, Netflix

A new two-part special coming to Netflix this January, this series tells the story of The Jerry Springer Show as it’s never been told before. Packed with extraordinary first-hand testimony and revelations from show insiders, the series explores how this daytime talk show became one of the biggest and most outrageous TV hits of the nineties. But behind the entertaining facade lay some darker truths. As we hear from the producers and ex-guests, a murkier picture begins to emerge of the destruction it caused, raising renewed questions about who was responsible, and how far things should go in the name of entertainment.

January 9

Get Away, Sky Cinema/NOW TV

Set in Sweden, this brand-new Sky Original movie follows a family’s holiday to a remote getaway. But the trip takes an unexpected turn when they discover the island they’re holidaying on is inhabited by a serial killer. Starring Nick Frost, Aisling Bea and Sebastian Croft amongst others.

January 10

Babygirl, in cinemas nationwide

A high-powered CEO puts her career and family on the line when she begins a torrid affair with her much younger intern. Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson star.

A Real Pain, in cinemas nationwide

A Real Pain follows mismatched cousins David (Jesse Eisenberg) and Benji (Kieran Culkin) as they reunite for a tour through Poland to honour their beloved grandmother. The adventure takes a turn when the odd couple’s old tensions resurface against the backdrop of their family history.

Goosebumps: The Vanishing, Disney+

The latest chapter of the thrilling anthology series, Goosebumps: The Vanishing premieres on Disney+ on January 10. The season begins when twins Devin and Cece Brewer are sent to spend a summer in Gravesend, Brooklyn with their divorced dad. A threat is stirring, and they quickly realise that dark secrets are among them, triggering a chain of events that unravel a profound mystery. As they delve into the unknown, Devin, Cece and their friends – Alex, CJ and Frankie – find themselves entangled in the chilling tale of four teenagers who mysteriously vanished in 1994. 

January 15

With Love, Meghan, Netflix

Meghan shares personal tips and tricks, embracing playfulness over perfection and highlights how easy it can be to create beauty, even in the unexpected. She and her guests roll up their sleeves in the kitchen, the garden, and beyond, and invite you to do the same. Guests include Roy Choi, Mindy Kaling and Alice Waters, with additional acclaimed chefs and special friends joining along the way.

January 17

Molly-Mae: Behind it All, Prime Video 

Molly-Mae: Behind it All will take viewers beyond the headlines to uncover the real Molly-Mae Hague, following her journey after her highly publicised break-up with Tommy Fury. Throughout the series, viewers will see Molly-Mae adapt to the challenges of being a single mum all while preparing to launch her biggest business venture to date, her clothing brand Maebe. Balancing the demands of motherhood, the weight of her brand’s success, and the high stakes of her latest business launch, this documentary offers an unfiltered glimpse into her strength and ambition. 

A Complete Unknown, in cinemas nationwide

Set in the influential New York music scene of the early 60s, A Complete Unkown follows 19-year-old Minnesota musician Bob Dylan’s (Timothée Chalamet) meteoric rise as a folk singer in concert halls and the top of the charts – his songs and mystique becoming a worldwide sensation – culminating in his groundbreaking electric rock and roll performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965.

Severance Season 2, Apple TV+

Mark Scout (Adam Scott) leads a team at Lumon Industries, whose employees have undergone a severance procedure that surgically divides their memories between their work and personal lives. This daring experiment in “work-life balance” is called into question as Mark finds himself at the centre of an unravelling mystery that will force him to confront the true nature of his work and himself. In season two, Mark and his friends learn the dire consequences of trifling with the severance barrier, leading them further down a path of woe.

Back in Action, Netflix 

Years after giving up life as CIA spies to start a family, Emily (Cameron Diaz) and Matt (Jamie Foxx) find themselves dragged back into the world of espionage when their cover is blown.

January 22

Prime Target, Apple TV+

Prime Target features a brilliant young math postgraduate, Edward Brooks (played by Leo Woodall), who is on the verge of a major breakthrough. If he succeeds in finding a pattern in prime numbers, he will hold the key to every computer in the world. Soon, he begins to realise an unseen enemy is trying to destroy his idea before it’s even born, which throws him into the orbit of Taylah Sanders, a female NSA agent (played by Quintessa Swindell) who’s been tasked with watching and reporting on mathematicians’ behaviour. Together, they start to unravel the troubling conspiracy Edward is at the heart of.

January 23

High Potential, Disney+

Starring Kaitlin Olson, High Potential follows a single mom with an exceptional mind, whose unconventional knack for solving crimes leads to an unusual and unstoppable partnership with a by-the-book seasoned detective (Daniel Sunjata).

The Night Agent Season 2, Netflix 

Based on the novel by Matthew Quirk, The Night Agent is a sophisticated, character-based, action-thriller centring on a low-level FBI agent who works in the basement of the White House, manning a phone that never rings – until the night that it does, propelling him into a fast-moving and dangerous conspiracy that ultimately leads all the way to the Oval Office.

January 24

The Brutalist, in cinemas nationwide

When a visionary architect and his wife flee post-war Europe in 1947 to rebuild their legacy and witness the birth of the modern United States, their lives are changed forever by a mysterious, wealthy client.

Flight Risk, in cinemas nationwide

In this high-stakes suspense thriller, Academy Award nominee Mark Wahlberg plays a pilot transporting an air marshal (Michelle Dockery) accompanying a fugitive (Topher Grace) to trial. As they cross the Alaskan wilderness, tensions soar and trust is tested, as not everyone on board is who they seem.

January 29

Mythic Quest Season 4, Apple TV+

Back under the same florescent office lights, the reunited team at Mythic Quest confronts new challenges amongst a changing video game landscape as stars rise, egos clash, relationships bloom and everyone tries to have a little more “work work” life balance.

January 30

Mo, Netflix

Mo Najjar straddles the line between two cultures, three languages and a ton of bullsh*t as a Palestinian on the path to U.S. citizenship. Season 2 finds Mo stranded across the border and desperate to get back to Houston before his family’s asylum hearing – but as a stateless refugee without a passport, he’s gonna need all the hustle and charm he can muster. Little does he know that the journey home is just the start of his troubles, and there’s a new guy in town ready to steal both his longtime love Maria and his dream of finally returning to Palestine.

You’re Cordially Invited, Prime Video 

When two weddings are accidentally booked on the same day at the same venue, each bridal party is challenged with preserving their family’s special moment while making the most of the unanticipated tight quarters. Saturday Night, in cinemas nationwide

Hard Truths, in cinemas nationwide

Hard Truths is a 2024 drama film written and directed by Mike Leigh and starring Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Michele Austin, and David Webber. Set in London, the plot follows the plight of depressed middle-aged woman Pansy and her relationship with her close ones, including the crumbling relationship with her jovial sister, Chantelle (who is her polar opposite in terms of mood).
