The College Green Hotel review: A 5-star stay in the heart of the city

The College Green Hotel review: A 5-star stay in the heart of the city

Offering unadulterated opulence from its perch between the Liffey and Trinity College, this five-star hotel just gets it right.

Given that I live in Cork and pay regular visits to the West to see both my boyfriend (Galway) and mother (Roscommon), a night away in the capital has become something of an anomaly for little old me. So, you can imagine my immense satisfaction and elation at the prospect of spending 24 hours curled up in the lap of luxury at The College Green Hotel.

Accompanied by one of my oldest friends on a flying visit from Berlin, the pair of us did our best to look composed, elusive and nonchalant as we checked into our Library Suite. Appearing entirely unphased on the surface as we internally fizzed with excitement, we took it all in: an opulent room complete with a spiral staircase leading to a mezzanine library area above (where there’s another TV, fireplace and a tea and coffee dock), plush robes, welcome chocolates, crisp sheets stretched across the biggest king-sized bed imaginable. Yes, this will do quite nicely.

The College Green Hotel review

On their website, they’ve listed themselves as the most centrally located five-star hotel in Dublin city, and stepping out onto the balcony to glimpse the Spire on one side, Trinity on the other, and Temple Bar just a stone’s throw away, it’s hard to imagine getting any closer to the city’s beating heart.

As anyone who has sauntered down it will know, Westmoreland Street is loud, and at times more than a little chaotic, which is a testament to the hotel’s soundproofing. It’s clearly working overtime, because regardless of our best intentions to venture further afield for a night cap, we were snoozing soundly by 11pm, tucked up in our robes after struggling to break into the aforementioned tightly stretched sheets.

Comprised of three historical buildings that originally housed a bank, which then became The Westin, after a hefty refurbishment and rebrand, the hotel stepped into its new era as The College Green Hotel. An imposing figure from the outside, its impressiveness does not wane as you venture from the reception area, through the corridors, and to your bedroom door.

Opting for a warm yet muted colour palette, the interiors seem to glow with an Art Deco charm that screams modern luxury. The creamy marble of the lobby gives way to plush carpets that sink underfoot as you pad your way upstairs, and the high end feel never slips for even a second. It is, clearly, a premium stay for those craving opulence, and I can’t imagine a better scenario than to return to its warm twinkling interiors after a day of Christmas shopping.

The rooms are well stocked with a Nespresso coffee machine, signature tea blends, bathrobes, slippers, and exclusive Amouage bathroom amenities. This includes a comb, a dental kit, a shaving kit, toothbrush and toothpaste, and of course shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. There’s also a signature scented reed diffuser in the bathroom, which makes the whole suite smell incredible.

On site, there are plenty of dining options. There’s The Atrium Lounge for afternoon tea, The Mint Bar for cocktails, small plates and more, and Morelands Grill for expertly crafted modern Irish cuisine. We enjoyed a three course meal in Morelands, and I am still thinking about the pork belly starter served with spiced apple sauce. The menu also features a ‘Josper Grill’ section, so if you’re a steak fan, these really are the best in show.

To sum up, The College Green Hotel promises a night of perfect peace in the beating heart of the city, which is something of a rarity. Regardless of the occasion or companion, it’s got a wow factor to it that will make you never want to leave.

Enjoy a two-night escape at The College Green Hotel Dublin this Christmas with a full breakfast each morning, mulled wine and minced pies on Christmas Eve, a decadent five-course Christmas dinner, festive entertainment and more starting at €767 per person sharing.
