How to approach wrapping a Christmas gift that doesn’t have a regular shape? We’ve asked stylist Orla Neligan for her nifty tips.

Wrapping seems to be something we all either love or loathe – and if you loathe it, nothing can stress you out more than trying to tackle a gift that has an irregular shape. Perhaps it’s wider on one side than the other, or is soft rather than having straight edges to work with.

That’s why we’ve asked stylist Orla Neligan for some ideas on how to wrap tricky gifts such as these – read on to find her step-by-step guide below. We also asked for her expert ideas on making our homes feel festive this season.

For those tricky gifts, Orla shows us how to wrap a bag, but you can apply this technique to many different items.

  1. Place your bag on the paper and cut it so it allows a little excess on each side and at the top. Remove the present and secure the middle with tape.
  2. Press the paper down to create creased edges.
  3. Fold up the bottom to create a crease, then open it up and fold in the edges, flatten and then fold down the top and bottom pieces and secure with tape. You should have a box-like shape as the bottom of your present.
  4. Insert the bag from the top opening.
  5. Using small folds, fold down the top twice and using a paper puncher, punch a hole in the folded piece.
  6. String ribbon through the holes and tie in a bow.
