Where to stay, eat and party in Mykonos

Where to stay, eat and party in Mykonos

Flying into Mykonos felt like gliding into a real-life postcard. As the EasyJet plane began its final descent over the Aegean Sea, the setting sun bathed the island in a warm, golden glow. The sky was ablaze with hues of orange, pink, and violet, casting a magical light over the rugged, rocky landscape below. Dotted across the sun-baked terrain were the iconic whitewashed buildings and blue-shuttered windows that epitomise the Greek Isles, their colours standing in vivid contrast against the deep blues of the sea and sky. It was a breathtaking introduction to an island that lives up to its reputation as a Mediterranean paradise.

Mykonos is one of the most popular destinations in Greece, renowned for its vibrant nightlife, luxurious resorts, and picturesque scenery. Over the years, it has evolved from a quiet fishing village into a glamorous playground for the rich and famous, drawing in celebrities, sports stars, and jet-setters from around the globe. Its allure lies in the blend of high-end cosmopolitan charm and traditional Greek hospitality. Luxury and simplicity exist together. The new and the old are one and the same.

It’s relaxing and boisterous, fun and serene. Mykonos offers a diverse range of holiday experiences, catering to all budgets and interests. No matter your preference, you can find all you desire on the island. Want to party? Mykonos won’t sleep. Want to rest? Mykonos will provide you with the sweetest dreams. Whatever you crave, the island will satisfy you.

So, what kind of holiday was I hunting for? Well, a little bit of everything. I wanted to experience all Mykonos had to offer. From its beach clubs to its parties to its indulgent luxurious escapes, there wasn’t a part of the island I didn’t want to embrace.

And so, here are my top picks for the ultimate Mykonos experience.

The hotel

My hotel of choice was Once in Mykonos. Originally used as a private villa, the building is now a beautiful hotel feast. An adults-only sanctuary with just 58 rooms, there are breathtaking ocean views and direct access to Ornos Beach. The hotel is just a 10-minute drive from the vibrant centre of Mykonos, yet it feels like a world away in a secluded corner of the island. The rooms are spacious and expertly decorated in whitewashed tones, leading to an authentic but modern Greek feel.

The food at the hotel is also exquisite. From its delicious breakfast buffet to its dinner options, all of the gastronomy on offer is inspired by classic Mediterranean tastes and flavours with a modern twist. However, a real highlight is the majestic Infinity Bar with its backdrop of Mykonos’ golden sunsets. Sitting with a cocktail in hand as the sun says goodbye is a moment never to be forgotten. Then to clear the head the morning after, make sure to enjoy some morning yoga while taking in those breathtaking views.

The party

For a true Mykonos party experience, the famous Scorpios cannot be beaten. The renowned beach club and lifestyle destination perfectly embodies the island’s bohemian spirit. Nestled on a sun-drenched peninsula, it combines rustic elegance with a relaxed, soulful ambience. By day, guests can unwind on private cabanas and sunbeds or indulge in a Mediterranean-inspired menu featuring fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

Then as the sun sets, Scorpios transforms into a vibrant gathering place, where resident DJs spin eclectic beats, and guests can dance the night away. It is also a great people-watching spot so if you want a glimpse into how the other half lives, Scorpios is the place to do so.

The restaurant

A culinary highlight of my trip was Kuzino at Ornus Beach. “Kuzina” means fragrances, flavours and joy and that’s exactly what you will find at this beachside establishment. With achingly chic interiors, the Chefs John Vidalis & Stratos Chronakis choose the finest local produce to prepare their dishes.

Deconstructed milfeu

My top picks include the green salad with grilled chicken fillet, seasonal fresh fruits, blueberries, hazelnuts and dressing in olive oil, lemon and mustard and for dessert, the ‘deconstructed’ millefeuille with puff pastry custard, vanilla and chocolate ice cream, sprinkled with almond crocant is a must-have. Then, of course, I finished off the meal with a shot of Ouzo because ‘when in Mykonos’, as they say.

Things to do

Outside of eating, drinking and being merry, there is much to do in Mykonos. Make sure to explore the charming narrow streets of Mykonos Town (Chora), where whitewashed houses, blue-domed churches, and boutique shops create a quintessential Greek island experience. Then visit the iconic windmills and Little Venice, where colourful buildings line the waterfront.

A great way to explore the island is by boat and Once in Mykonos was able to organise an excursion for us around the coastline. We were treated to breathtaking views of secluded beaches, dramatic cliffs, and some of the more luxurious beach clubs such as NAMMOS. A visit to Delos, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece is also a must-see. According to the legend, it was on Delos where Apollo-Sun, god of daylight, and his twin sister Artemis-Moon, goddess of night light, were born. Locals believe the island has spiritual powers and especially recommend a visit during a full moon.

Unfortunately, strong sea breezes prevent us from reaching the island but it just means I’ll have to visit the island of Mykonos once again. And I hope it’s a trip that will happen very, very soon.
