Simple to achieve but so impressive, this clever gift wrapping technique is worth a try this Christmas.

If you’re looking for ideas for how to make your Christmas gifts stand out this year, look no further. We’ve asked stylist Orla Neligan to share some tips and tricks for making presents look extra special, and here, she shows us how to create a pretty fan with just a little folding.

Orla has demonstrated this technique with a wallet, however it works well on any similarly shaped item.

While you’re in the festive spirit, we also asked Orla for some easy homemade decorations to try. “If you invest in a basic plain wreath, then each year you can change up the décor by simply switching out the items such as ribbon and dried fruit or baubles,” Orla recommends.

“I also love a dried orange garland,” she says, “they’re easy to make and look lovely strung along a mantel or window.”

If you want something different than a traditional wreath, Orla suggests swapping it for an oversized bow in a fun fabric. “Another easy, homemade decoration is eucalyptus, which looks great as a bunch and hung upside down in a window by a lovely big velvet ribbon. You’ll also get a bang for your buck since it has longevity and dries out gracefully.”

How to: wrap a wallet

1. Cut your paper leaving two finger lengths at one end and just enough paper so it folds in the middle without too much excess.

2. Tape the middle and one end in place.

3. Fold down the excess in small sections, back and forth, until you meet the top of the present so it looks like a fan.

4. Tie a ribbon starting in the middle of the folded-down paper and around the present lengthways. Secure in the middle with a bow.

5. Secure double-sided tape to each end of the folded paper and join them together over the ribbon to create a semi-circle fan effect.
