Explaining rosacea – the most common skin condition in Ireland
10th Nov 2023
Rosacea is a common, yet misunderstood, skin condition that, according to the HSE, affects as many as one in ten Irish people. But why does it develop? What are the symptoms? And what are the most effective treatments?
We all know that ruddy Irish complexion, we can all imagine those pink flushed cheeks after a walk in the cold. Rosacea however, is something a little different, and for those affected, can be challenging. It’s characterised by redness, flushing, visible blood vessels, and acne-like bumps on the face.
It primarily affects the central part of the face, including the cheeks, nose, forehead, and chin. It’s more common in women and people with lighter skin, but symptoms can be worse in men. Genetics may also play a role, as rosacea often runs in families.
It is not known what causes rosacea, but there are some triggers that can make symptoms worse. These include:
- Weather: Our cool, damp climate can be a significant trigger, with cold and windy weather leading to flare-ups.
- Sun exposure: UV radiation from the sun can worsen rosacea symptoms. Wearing sunscreen and protective clothing is essential.
- Spicy foods and alcohol: Certain foods and beverages, like spicy dishes and alcohol, can cause flushing and redness in people with rosacea.
- Stress: Emotional stress and anxiety may exacerbate rosacea symptoms.
- Skincare products: Harsh skincare products, especially those containing alcohol or fragrances, can irritate sensitive skin and worsen rosacea.
So how do you know if you have rosacea? Rosacea manifests in various ways, and its severity can range from mild to severe. Common symptoms include:
- Persistent redness, particularly on the central face, is a hallmark of rosacea.
- You may experience frequent flushing or blushing episodes.
- Small, dilated blood vessels, known as telangiectasia, become visible on the skin’s surface.
- Acne-like bumps and pustules can develop, leading to an uneven texture on the skin.
- Ocular rosacea may cause dryness, irritation, and redness in the eyes.
