Treating women suffering from pelvic pain in maternity hospitals adds to the distress of chronic pain and does not deliver the medical service required. For women who may be infertile or struggle with pregnancy, surrounding them with pregnant women adds to their distress and feels like a punishment. The wellbeing of many patients depends on a separation of services.

Unfortunately, over one-third of reproductive-aged women will experience non-menstrual pelvic pain at some point in their lives. While most acute pelvic pain is caused by reproductive, urinary or gastrointestinal tract disorders, abnormalities of musculoskeletal, vascular and neurological processes can play a major role.
