A lot of the science behind anti-ageing and preserving our youth comes to us from future-looking doctors, professors and scientists, but also from a data-hungry tech and STEM community, biohackers (or “garage biologists”) keen to explore DIY ways of improving performance, health and have full control over their bodies.
Some common biohacking techniques – like meditation, cold therapy and intermittent fasting – have been around forever, other biohackers use a highly technical approach to engineering their own bodies while attempting to fix their flaws and make themselves superhuman.
Here, we highlight ten key biohackers to know…
Referred to as The Father of Biohacking and the man who got us putting butter in our coffee in the 2010s. Founder of the Bulletproof brand and laterally, Upgrade labs and The Human Upgrade podcast. Through this diet, he has successfully maintained a 100-pound weight loss, enhanced his sleep, and improved cognitive function, exemplifying the transformative power of his methodologies.
Professor at Harvard Medical School – specialising in ageing and longevity. Focus on the role of Sirtuins, a type of protein involved in regulating cellular processes including the ageing and death of cells and their resistance to stress. A proponent of the role of NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, an assistant to the cell’s mitochondria), in ageing and disease.
Or @timbiohacker, is the UK’s leading biohacker and founder of the Optimal Health Summit. He takes a pragmatic view to health and longevity encouraging lifestyle change, nutrition and avoidance of toxic materials as the way forward.
‘The most measured man in human history’. Johnson invests over 2 million dollars per year on a series of strict protocols and lifestyle to return his body to the vitals of an 18-year-old. The founder of Braintree (bought by Paypal for $800 million) and Kernel, developing advanced neuroscience technologies.
AKA The Iceman who’s known for cold exposure, breathing techniques, meditation and the body’s potential to heal and adapt.
Believes in the key roles of ketosis, fasting and nutrition in metabolic health and positive ageing. An advocate for Medicine 3.0 which focuses on preventing disease and optimising health rather than treating illness.
A leading figure in functional medicine. Looks to food as medicine, using food to improve health and reduce chronic illness.
A leading anti-ageing and regenerative physician. Transitioning from emergency medicine to longevity medicine, she advocates for integrating lifestyle changes, integrative medicine, and advanced therapies. Merging modern technology with traditional medicine she co-developed the Full Body Stem Cell Makeover, a groundbreaking procedure combining stem cell injections with energy-focused protocols for rejuvenation.
AKA the Glucose Goddess, is a French biochemist with a focus on blood glucose management. Jessie’s approach combines scientific rigour with an engaging and easy-to-understand style to demonstrate how small, science-based adjustments in diet and lifestyle can have a profound impact on overall health and wellbeing into senior years.
A forerunner in the fields of health and longevity optimisation, digital health technology and psychedelic medicine (a very hot topic in the biohacking world). A former lecturer in healthspan at Stanford University’s Medical School, she is now focused on modern approaches to sex and psychedelic education, aiming to broaden public understanding in these fields.
