Consider this your word of cosmic caution.
For the astrologically inclined among us, the word ‘retrograde’ may fill you with a sense of existential uneasiness. Regardless of the fact that every planet goes through a backwards spin every at some point or another, the term is most closely associated with Mercury, which goes retrograde three to four times a year and lends a certain celestial chaos to regular programming.
If you find your emotions bending in accordance with the movements of the planets, news that Venus has been in retrograde since Saturday 22 July — and will continue to move in reverse until Sunday 3 September — might leave you feeling just a little bit tense. But what does it all mean, damn it?!
Considered to be one of the most potent planetary retrogrades of them all, Venus governs all things pleasure, love, and money. Representing everything that us mere mortals are bound to crave and yearn for, Venus stops, pivots, and spins backwards every 18 months. Compared to the ever-too-frequent Mercury retrograde, it really doesn’t happen all that often, but what it lacks in frequency it sure as hell makes up for in longevity and significance.
Named after the Roman goddess of love and beauty — and her Greek counterpart, Aphrodite — Venus is the second planet from the sun and also happens to be the hottest and brightest planet in the solar system. Astrologically speaking, the energy given off by Venus is all about attraction. The arts and aesthetics also fall within the realm of Venus, making it inextricably linked to refinement, decadence, pleasure and sensuality.
So, what happens when the ruler of our connection, desire, awe, and feelings of ecstasy begins to spin back on itself?
First things first, this planet represents our dreamstate reality, the idealised version of what we could be, what we want, not necessarily need. Before you, yourself, spin off into a frenzy, remember that astrologers view periods of retrograde as opportunities for contemplation, reflection, and reassessment.
It’s also important to note that this Venus retrograde is moving backwards through Leo, the most boisterous, courageous, and unapologetic fire sign of them all. This calls for us to examine themes of confidence, loyalty, and authenticity. It’s a time for experimentation, whether that’s with your personal style or lifestyle choices. This period should also give you pause to take a look at your priorities, especially when it comes to your relationships. It’s also been well documented that old flames may resurface, so do yourself a favour and try your absolute best to figure out what it is that you want.
As the planet of beauty, aesthetics, and love, a stint in retrograde may well bring some insecurities to the surface. It’s uncomfortable and might fuel some feelings of anxiety, but it’s important to explore that, and figure out the ways that you can love yourself more and focus on yourself for affirmation and validation. It’s a chance to take stock of what’s happening inside your heart and deep within your head, dust off the cobwebs and tidy things up until you’re able to articulate what you need moving forwards, whether that’s in work, in your relationships, or within yourself.
Essentially, Venus retrograde will likely feel emotionally intense. It demands introspection, which may be something you’ve been avoiding, but as with death and taxes, it’s one of life’s certainties. Tread softly, and go easy on yourself.
