With the weather turning grey, why not inject some colour and no small amount of joy into your wardrobe with these colour trainers

In the life we knew before, high heels and boots were our footwear of choice. Life and work demanded an effort. Trainers were used as stylish apparel, of course, but there was a sense of duty about them. We put trainers on for exercise and weekend step counts. They were practical and went with everything, but for most of us, they weren’t top of our fashion haul list.

Nowadays, trainers may be the best way to bring sartorial joy into daily life. There are entire Instagram accounts are dedicated to them. People can pay thousands for rare pairs and brands are experimenting more and more with colours, designs and shapes. And in the post-pandemic world trainers are the only acceptable footwear of choice. So why not make them extra special? Look out for patterns such as leopard, intricate embroidery or any design element that adds edge.

Don’t be scared of bright colours. In darker days, we say the brighter the better. Think reds, greens and purples. An all-black leisurewear outfit deserves a colour pop. I have a pair of red Nikes’ that I bought in NYC. Among a sea of black and white, they shone like burning stars and they feel like my New York power source every time I put them on.

And so, below are five pairs of seriously covetable trainers that can only be described as works of art.

Punk Uplift

A pair of Converse are a wardrobe staple. Over recent years, the brand has collaborated with some big designers (hello Comme De Garcons) and experimented with different colourways and designs to bring the heritage brand into the 21st-century hustle.

And it’s fair to say they have succeeded, with Vice President Kamala Harris regularly donning her Chucks as she hit the campaign trails last year. These Chuck Taylor All Star trainers in black with intricate embroidery are a stunning feat in footwear, elevating a basic to extra status.

Colour Punch

If you really want to make a statement, try these Puma x Haribo RS-X³ trainers. Pair with jeans and an oversized coat for cosy casual wear now and with mini and midi dresses once the weather heats up.

Suede Effect

Go colourful or go home I always say. If you like bright colours and a vintage feel, these Nike trainers will do just the trick. The suede effect adds luxe and expense but the bright colours keep it within edgy boundaries. Wear under black relaxed leather trousers and a knit bodysuit for a powerful look.

Muted with a Twist

If bright colours and eclectic patterns freeze you with fear, look for a muted pair with a hint of artistic prowess. These Air Force 1 Shadow sneakers are made from sustainable materials and have just a subtle amount of colour.
