Alternatives to a red lip at Christmas

Alternatives to a red lip at Christmas

At this time of year, when you may have more than one night out on the horizon, you may be looking for a little make-up inspiration. Everywhere you turn there’s someone trying to sell you a red lipstick paired with a cat eye. We’re not saying this isn’t a great look, it’s classic and universally flattering. But, it can get a little boring, and we’ve been on the hunt for some alternative Christmas looks.

Pat McGrath Blitztrance Lipstick; €35.00 at patmcgrath.com

We were enamored with this lipstick when it launched last month, but now it’s December we love it even more. If there was ever a brand to gravitate towards for something a bit different it’s Pat McGrath Labs, not always the most wearable, but most definitely fun. A glittery pout might look a little unusual under the mistletoe, but if there was ever a time to wear it, its now.

Fenty Eclipse 2-in-1 Glitter Release Eyeliner; £17 at harveynichols.com

Green glitter eyeliner is a fun way to inject some cosmic creativity into your Christmas look. Keep it close to the lash line to play it down, or go all out with dramatic wings that can’t go unnoticed. This eyeliner is part of the limited edition Holiday collection for Fenty, so snap it up quick.

Laura Mercier Velour Extreme Matte Lipstick; €26.00 at brownthomas.ie

Sometimes a night out just calls for a bold lipstick. Opt for something dark and vampy instead of the classic Christmas red,  it still feels like you’re in the festive spirit but a little more dramatic. We love the Velour Extreme Matte Lips from Laura Mercier, as they pack such a punch with colour and have serious staying power.

Urban Decay Razor Sharp Water-Resistant Longwear Liquid Eyeliner; €18.27 at debenhams.ie

If glitter eyeliner is a step too far for you, just trying a different colour can work really well. Purple is a good place to start as it’s still a dark shade, and looks amazingly festive paired with some gold eyeshadow.
