Ask the experts: Should you match your eyelash extensions to your eye shape?

Ahead of the IMAGE Business of Beauty Awards 2020, powered by Dyson, we caught up with the nominees in the Best Eyelash Artist category to get some insider tips on how get the most out of our lashes.

Here at IMAGE we treat our beauty as serious business. If we’re investing in something, we want to know if it’ll work for us, is it the right fit, the right shape, will it fit into our busy lifestyles?

That’s why it’s important to know if a certain hairstyle will suit your face shape, or a cut of jeans will flatter your body.

But have you ever considered if your eyelash extensions were the right shape for your yes?

We asked the experts – the eyelash artists nominated in the IMAGE Business of Beauty Awards 2020, powered by Dyson – to be exact. Here’s what they had to say.

“Different eye shapes will suit different styles of extensions,” says Rachel Bryan, of Mimi’s Beauty Room. “For example, a rounded eye will suit a longer length on the outer corner to elongate the eye shape. This should all be discussed in detail during your consultation with your lash artist.”

Olivia Fitzsimons, of Olivia Fitzsimons Beauty, says, “Everyone’s eye shape and personal taste is different. That’s why you should have a thorough consultation with your eyelash technician to make sure you’re on the same page.

“This is the exact same when it comes to false lashes. What suits your friend might not suit you. I would always recommend starting out with a set from the Ardell Natural range, and then you’ll find if you need more length in the middle of the lash or on the end to open up your eyes. Then you can experiment with more volume as you get more comfortable with the application and feel of the lashes.”

“I believe no two eyes are the same so why would the eye’s lashes be,” says Jenni Mahon, of Envy Beauty in Enfield. “Lash design is so important, a wrong design choice could make an eye appear smaller or even make the eyes look too close together or too far apart.

“When choosing a lash design to suit a client, I have to take into consideration what she is looking for – would she prefer a dramatic or natural final look; does she wear much make-up on a daily basis, what is her natural lash length and curl – while also creating a style that will enhance her natural eye shape and compliment her face.

“This is why a lash consultation is vital and is one of the most important steps of lash extensions.”

Ciara Foley, of Allure Beauty and Nail Spa, says, “Your eye shape would definitely affect the style of eyelash extension or strip lash that would suit you. If the style has been chosen incorrectly, instead of complementing your eye shape it can make them look droopy or sad.

“For lash extensions your lash artist will determine your eye shape and choose a style to suit you such as Cat Eye, Dolly or Squirrel.”

So there you have it ladies, a definitive “yes” on matching your eyelash extensions to your eye shape.

No we’re just off to determine whether we’re a cat or a squirrel…
