Stars gathered in London for the Baftas, the last movie awards before the Oscars at the end of the season
Between Bridget Jones jokes, Graham Norton’s hosting, and Joaquin Phoenix’s brilliant acceptance speech, last night’s 2020 Baftas did not disappoint in water cooler talking points for this cold Monday morning. Here at IMAGE, we love to pore over each detail of award season, and one of our favourite themes of the evenings is beauty.
Stars from some of the year’s biggest movies put on their glad rags and employed the industry’s top make-up artists and hairstylists to create looks that would hit the headlines and inspire DIY-looks for the next few months.
Apart from a few sparkly showstoppers, the trend of the year for this Baftas was a very demure and fresh-faced look. Flushes of pinks and soft reds across lips, eyes and cheeks gave us a range of feminine and classicly beautiful looks across the red carpet, with the odd cat-eye black eyeliner applied to finish it off. Red lips were everywhere, but have moved away from the Hollywood matte crimson look, and towards corals and glossy pinky-reds, in a colour scheme that has us very excited for SS20.
On the hair front, slick and stylish up-dos were the style of choice for many stars, preferring to let their fresh and simple make-up looks do the talking. High ponytails, intricate twists and turns, and slicked down curls — all had pride of place on the red carpet.

Zoe Kravitz has not put a foot wrong this awards season, and last night’s Baftas were no exception. Kravitz complemented her simple (but stunning) gold YSL gown with coral red lips, eyes and ears (by way of dangling earrings).
Our own Saoirse Ronan provided one of the most fun looks of the evening, pairing a rockabilly twist of blonde hair with flushed coral lips and rainbow earrings.
Beetz provided a delightful verge from the norm, opting for vampy lips and cascading hair rather than the slick up-dos and barely-there make-up of the rest of the red carpet last night.
A high ponytail, pretty-in-pink eyes and a Giambattista Valli gown meant that Ella Balinska’s youthful and feminine features could have some fun at the Baftas last night.
A personal favourite of the red carpet looks this season, Jodie Smith, who is seven months pregnant with her first child, looked stunning in a vibrant yellow Gucci gown, complemented to no end by her hair and make-up. A curly chopped bob paired with a violet smokey eye made Smith one of the stand-outs of the night.
The now-famed ‘Pugh pout’ was decorated with an orange-red Chantecaille lipstick, giving us a perfectly complementary beauty look to go with her divine Dries gown. Fluffy brows, a slicked-back do (which has become something of a signature for Pugh this season), and accentuated cat-eyes completed her look.
Prom-ready in a sweet bun and pink-flushed features, Dever’s look was a perfect English rose.
