Awards season 2019 has officially begun, which means we get to come to work on a Monday morning and compare notes on our favourite looks of the night. The Golden Globes is usually a little more low-key than the Oscars (unless you’re Lady Ga Ga) as people save their dramatic gowns and make-up for the Academy Awards. With the Oscars, beauty looks are more classic and refined, as if you’re a big winner you’ll be watching that acceptance speech for years to come. This makes beauty at the Golden Globes a little more fun and experimental. We tend to see more colour and daring, which was definitely the case with last night. Prepare for lots of matchy-matchy, colourful eyes and a lesson in old-school, Hollywood Glamour.
We love a bit of colour coordination here at IMAGE so we are really into this look from Emily Blunt. Make-up artist for Dior Beauty, Jenn Streicher created a subtle smokey eye on the night in soft greys and silvers, matching perfectly with her Alexander McQueen gown.
When your hair looks this good you really don’t need to do much else. We love that Thandie Newton went all out with her hair but paired it with a nude lip and smokey eye. Take note- bigger is sometimes better.
Camilla Belle was an absolute stand-out for us on the red carpet last night for her bold use of colour. With her slicked back hair, the bright green shadow is the star of the show.
We have a feeling hairdressers worldwide will be shown this picture as hairspiration over the next few weeks (my own included). We love the blunt, choppy shape to her cut with lots of texture through the waves. The texture didn’t stop there, as she also went for spidery lashes and fluffed up brows to boot.
Another celebrity not afraid to play with colour on her eyes was Lupita Nyong’o, also choosing to match her shadow to her dress. Not only did the cobalt blue shadow run along her lower lash line but her outer lashes were the same shade, making the colour more noticeable with each lash flutter.
This is an absolute lesson in red carpet makeup, the peachy lip and soft smokey eyes keeps the slicked back hair from being too severe. With cheekbones like Jessica Chastain’s we would also be showing them off, however we think we’d need far more contour than her to make it work.
Sandra Oh was serving us some old-school Hollywood glamour last night. The Jessica Rabbit side waves, paired with a feline flick and red lip is always a winning look for an awards ceremony as it never dates. What avoids this becoming too harsh and predictable of a look is how softly the hair and lip were created.
