The hair lesson I’m slowly learning (and why I’m not happy about it)

Who knew one single hair lesson could change the way I see my hair altogether? Well, it has. And I have to admit, I’m not terribly excited about it…

For my whole life, I aimed for big hair. I have very little hair, but big hair was the goal and by god was I going to get it.

I used volumising shampoos, texture sprays, texture dusts, backcombing and extensions – everything I could think of to give the illusion of more hair.

More hair is the dream, right?

Well…

For a thin or fine haired person, thicker hair is what you want. I’m eternally jealous when I hear of those people who need undercuts because their own hair is so hard to manage – I would revel in that level of hair management.

But recently I tried something new, and had more people tell me my hair was lovely than ever before.

A new approach

For the first time I think ever, I prioritised hair health over all else. I tried scalp scrubs, heat protectors, blow dry cremes, new brushes, a lower heat, more regular trims – anything that could give my hair back health, rather than trying to beat volume into it (rather aggressively, to be fair).

The hair lesson…

As it turns out, while I didn’t quite feel like myself, my hair looked and felt better than ever. I’m not saying it’ll be a permanent thing,  but for the moment, keeping my hair looking healthy is working for me.

Here are three of the products I used to achieve hair health…

  • A scalp scrub to maintain my scalp health, meaning my hair could grow at it’s best
  • A post-wash leave-in spray to strengthen my hair’s fibres
  • A deeply nourishing moisturising treatment to keep my hair from looking dry (as blonde hair tends to do when not looked after properly)
