As always, it’s been a busy few days for the Kardashians and Jenners. This time round headline grabbing duties belong to the youngest sister Kylie Jenner after an Instagram post of her wearing cornrows has sparked a major debate about cultural appropriation.
The 17-year-old is busy promoting her new extensions line at the moment but took a break from her almost-signature-by-now mermaid locks to show off a new hairstyle of cornrows. She posted a selfie to Instagram with the caption ?I woke up like disss.?
However, one of her peers decided to have some words with the young entrepreneur and reality tv star. Amandla Stenberg, who starred in The Hunger Games and has garnered universal admiration for a video she posted on social media a few months ago calling out the appropriation of black culture, commented on Kylie’s post.
?When u appropriate black features and culture but fail to use ur position of power to help black Americans by directing attention towards ur wigs instead of police brutality or racism #whitegirlsdoitbetter,? the 16-year-old said.
Kylie responded to this legitimate callout with the immature and mysterious ?Mad if I don’t, Mad if I do?. Go hang w Jaden or something.? The Daily Mail reports that this was a reference to the fact Amandla went to the Prom with Jaden Smith, son of Will and Jada Pinkett, in May. The reason for Kylie’s ungraceful reply may have something to do with the fact she allegedly dated the young actor, according to the Mail.
Even if there is some teenage angst and drama behind this ?fued?, Kylie, who comes from one of the most media savvy families in the world, really should know better. After all, Amandla’s video Don’t Cash Crop My Cornrows: A Crash Discourse on Black Culture was a viral and intelligent piece of work. It’s really worth watching if you missed it the first time round, so that you can see what all the justified fuss is over.
