We’ve found 10 seriously snug coats that will keep you cosy during this freezing weather
11th Nov 2019
The winter chill is here, meaning you need some strong outerwear for your morning commute. Looking for something that keeps you both warm and stylish? We searched high and low for big coats with even bigger fashion credentials
It is officially cold.
This isn’t the type of cold that us Irish complain about daily. That type is just for small talk and is a good filler when we struggle to think of something to say. No, this is the type that runs right through you from the skin to the bones. It makes your hands appear red-raw and swells your fingers to the width of raw Clonakilty sausages.
I stood for 45 minutes in this cold this morning. Dublin Bus decided to play a game of ‘hide and go seek the non-existent number 18 to Sandymount’ at the break of dawn – and I did not want to participate.
Thankfully, I was wearing a big coat. A teddy coat to be exact. Enormous and fluffy and with the same level of heat retention as a storage heater. From now until March, a big coat is the only way to save you from hypothermia on those bitterly cold days when a normal coat just won’t suffice.
All about texture
Luckily, these are a dime a dozen in the fashion world. From MaxMara with its notorious teddy coats to Dries Van Noten and its oversized quilted blanket creation that doubles as a work of art– it’s go big or go home this season.
And we mean it when we say it’s time to bulk (and this time without the protein powder and heavy dumbells).
A big coat is all about texture, so look out for teddy, faux fur and shearling styles. Go up a size so that you can layer knitwear underneath and achieve a true oversized look. If you are afraid of looking too bulky, stay true to size and keep the rest of your silhouette streamlined.
As with all coats, there is nothing in your wardrobe a coat won’t complement. Wear yours with knee-high boots and a midi dress or with chunky trainers and a hoodie underneath. Even the puffer jackets have universal appeal — try pairing one with a slip dress and heels for a street-style edge during party season.
