Across the pond, we were stuck to our phones this week to see the fabulous fashion offerings from London Fashion Week. Relive our favourites below…
A family affair at Victoria Beckham
IMAGE’s own Fashion Director Marie Kelly is, as we all know, a massive fan of the iconic VB, so we were all anticipating the VB London Fashion Week offering. But while the clothes themselves — typical Beckham classics, with sharp tailoring paired with fresh femininity — were to die for, the real stars of the show were the coveted front row attendees.
British and American Vogue Editors in Chief Edward Enninful and Anna Wintour made an appearance, but the Beckham brood, complete with budding fashionista Harper (aged seven) was a heartwarming addition.
The Irish take over
As our closest fashion-forward neighbour, it’s no surprise that the Irish fashion takeover was most apparent at London Fashion Week. From behind-the-scenes to models to the designers themselves, Ireland flew their flag over SS20, in an atmosphere that was distinctly European and Brexit-conscious.
JW Anderson
Northern Irish-native JW Anderson hit the Instagram highlights of publications worldwide for his distinctive chest-framing embellishments in his SS20 collection. Draped over romantic flowing full-length dresses in a variety of colours, the sparkling boob tube may be next summer’s most sought-after accessory.
Paul Costelloe
A bold move for the usually classic Paul Costelloe, his SS20 collection exploded onto our Insta feeds in a cacophony of colour. Bright 60s and 70s prints, shaggy beehives and punchy accessories have us ready for Hot Girl Summer 2.0 in a year’s time.
Simone Rocha
How do we love thee, Simone Rocha? Let me count the ways. Rocha’s signature dreamy romanticism clashed with punky feminine touches was a joy to behold on the London runway this week.
Tulle, toile, lace and leather adorned a pleasingly diverse line up of models, including an Irish cohort of Olwen Fouéré, Jessie Buckley, Simone Kirby and Charlene McKenna.
She also shone a light on her Irish-Chinese heritage throughout the show, celebrating the Celtic tradition of Wren Day. She told CNN: “I do keep my politics and my creativity separate but I’m very proud of being Irish and being European, so it’s fitting to do something that I’m really proud of and connected to.”
Absolutely everything at Erdem
If, like me, you’ve spent your summer trawling Etsy for 70s prairie dresses in a rainbow of colourways, you too will have drooled over your phone at shots from Erdem at the Gray’s Inn Gardens.
Frills, flounces, ribbons and bows did nothing to take away from the punchy vibrancy of Erdem’s clashing colours. Many of the trends can already be bought into, with big frilly collars, strong shoulders and floral print maxis all a staple of the high street already.
But the trend we’re most looking forward to? An oversized sun hat, complete with ostentatious ribbon. Expect to see them all over ASOS come spring.
A Woodstock wonderland at RIXO
Fast becoming known for their experiential runway shows (remember the glittering disco of their AW19 show earlier this year?) cult favourite RIXO brought us all to a vintage festival at this year’s SS20 showing.
Already holding the crown for perfecting the flattering midi dress, this season’s offering included plenty of autumnal colours, groovy prints and even pointed us in the right direction for styling — mini plaits and face paint, anyone?
Naomi Campbell at Fashion for Relief
Now in its 14th year, Naomi Campbell’s charity offering Fashion for Relief was an early highlight of London Fashion Week. In aid of UNICEF, the organisation has raised over $15 million for charity since its inception, and attracts a plethora of famous faces to its runway show every year.
Naomi herself (never one to shy away from the spotlight) was the undisputed star of the show, walking in a variety of stunning looks from top designers. Our favourite? This rainbow creation from John Paul Gaultier — do you reckon colour will be a big theme for SS20?
