Five beautifully styled outfits that offer perfect inspiration for April

As the light in this long, dark tunnel continues to slowly brighten, we’re trying to get back into the habit of dressing that, well, makes us look like we actually got dressed. Here to remind us all how it’s done is Marie Kelly.

Trans-seasonal months are the trickiest to dress for. April may officially be spring, but the weather is more often schizophrenic than sunny. For many of us, April is a tale of two wardrobes, with neither feeling like it’s quite the right fit. So we’re taking sartorial inspiration from the street stars of the world’s fashion capitals, from London to Milan.

A fresh print, a textured sweater and a pop of primary colour (with a touch of whimsy) hit just the right note for a month of chilly mornings and gentle afternoon sunshine.

If in doubt, denim and monochrome always look appropriate – not too wintry, not too summery. Generally speaking, denim is your trans-seasonal sartorial salvation. Perhaps, opt for a lighter wash and a cropped version so as to nod to the season ahead.

Navy is a great trans-seasonal shade; softer than black but still strong enough to anchor a look. Not everyone (over age ten) can pull off socks and shoes, but it’s a great way to lighten your look (tights just look wrong at this time of year, unless they’re footless) while still staying warm. A neutral trench never looks out of season, and that’s why it ends up on many women’s shopping list.

Layers are key to getting your outfit right this month. Sleeveless jackets work really well because they add warmth without overwhelming a more spring-like look. Prints are a great choice, too. They feel fresh and new season, but you can choose them in a weightier, warmer fabric so there’s no need to sacrifice comfort for style.

Cotton shirts are another failsafe fit for April. If the weather hots up, loosen your collar and roll up your sleeves. Blue and orange is a really strong colour pairing, so the tangerine handbag instantly freshens up this tailored jumpsuit. Trainers rather than shoes also add new-season freshness, without any premature toe exposure.
