A Dedicated Fashion Museum Is Finally Opening In France

And Chanel is donating €6 million to make it happen.

How it took so long to create a dedicated museum to house the likes of Yves Henri Donat Mathieu-Saint-Laurent,?Gabrielle Bonheur “Coco” Chanel,?Christian Louboutin, Hubert De Givenchy, Christian Dior, John Galliano,?Christian Lacroix, and Thierry Mugler, to name a few, comes as a great surprise. But better late than never, right?

The new purpose-built venue is set to be built?inside the Palais Galliera?,?and although is already considered the Fashion Museum of Paris, currently only displays temporary exhibits. Seeing the historical relevance of the move, Karl Lagerfeld and his Chanel Fashion House are working alongside the French government to ensure the build will be decked-out to the highest possible quality to ensure the longevity of some of the?fashion industries most influential and historically important designers.

Palais Galliera, France, which will host the dedicated museum

The new 7,211-square-foot area will have a year-round exhibit dedicated to fashion’s history from the 18th century to today, plus a learning workshop and a bookstore, according to a press release.?Once the project is completed Palais Galliera, whose archives count 200,000 pieces (including clothes, accessories, photography and graphic art), will become the only permanent fashion museum in France. On an international scale, it will join the circle of institutions that present collections dedicated to the history of fashion.

“This initiative represents a lasting commitment to creation and to the strength of Paris, which are at the heart of Chanel’s business. Supporting an institution like the Palais Galliera is part of our mission to bring fashion history to life.” says Bruno Pavlovsky, President of Chanel Fashion, in an official statement.

The museum is set to open in 2019 and will be very aptly named “The Gabrielle Chanel rooms”.
