The search for a leather skirt requires even more patience and perseverance than hunting down the ideal pair of denims. This is in part because leather skirts are not as ubiquitous in stores, but also because there are so many elements that have to be exactly right before I’ll invest in what really is a forever piece; the leather has to be beautifully supple, the fit tailored but definitely not tight, and the length firmly midi, as that’s what suits my shape. And if I can find a leather skirt with pockets, then that’s an absolute bonus (all skirts should have pockets in my mind).
My search began early this year when images of butter-soft leather dresses and skirts emerged from the AW18 fashion weeks. I discounted the dresses for fear I’d look more Kim K than Kate Moss. A skirt, however, I could soften with tactile knits and textured fabrics. It would make a statement and acknowledge the trend without slapping others in the face with it. As my search progressed I felt like I’d morphed into Goldilocks… “This skirt is too short. This skirt is too big…” It took more than three tries before I found a leather skirt that was just right.
My perfect leather skirt is from Sandro (below). It has an A-line silhouette which I love because it’s flattering, but also because it has a slight 1970s hit off it. And it has front pockets! The front slit is just long enough to allow for easy movement, but discreet enough that I don’t feel my legs are on show when I walk. The leather is butter-soft (that phrase is so overused, but in this case it’s completely true), and the length is perfect on me. I’m 5’6″, so it hangs a little longer on me than it does on the model, which I like (to see how I wore it, check out my Instagram feed, @mkellyfashioned).
Long leather skirt with front slit, €465 at Sandro
Although this is my dream leather skirt, it won’t be for everyone, so here are a few more that are worth checking out. They didn’t suit me, but that’s not to say they won’t be gorgeous on you.
