Short suits are the new summer staple. We explain why this is and where you can buy seven of the best…
There are some things I swore I would never wear.
In no particular order, these items are bicycle shorts, hot pants, and Bermuda shorts. Basically, just shorts. The stress of chaffing thighs was too much to handle, and the dreaded crotch situation / gaping waistlines sent me into cold sweats in my sleep.
However, very recently, my head has been turned by a specific short suit. A Topshop, camel, pinstripe creation with a tailored blazer and paper bag waist shorts.
But with business at the top and a party at the bottom, a short suit can be tricky. Even trickier than shorts themselves. Still, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. They say if you can’t stop thinking about something you have to buy it, right?
Putting my preconceived notions about shorts aside, I gave it a chance and fell in love; quickly and deeply. There is something smart yet quite sexy about a short suit. The structure of the blazer is complemented by the slouch of the shorts and gives a modern take on the traditional power suit.
How to wear
Bermuda style shorts are on-trend but may seem like an awkward choice with their longer length. If you are on the shorter side, make sure they end above the knee, as this will elongate the leg. Shorter styles are perfect for a night out when paired with heels, while trainers will make it accessibly cool.
The true power of this type of suit is in its versatility. When paired with a plain white t-shirt you retain that untouchable eighties’ era cool; but when matched with a crisp shirt, you are ready for summertime in the office. What’s more, when you purchase, you have two pieces to mix and match with the rest of your wardrobe; meaning you will get a very healthy cost per wear ratio.
The high street has an abundance of choices at the moment, from the Topshop pinstripe dream I mentioned earlier to Arket’s light yellow wonder made from a linen and cotton mix (meaning it’s perfect for warmer weather).
Trust me when I say to give a short suit a try; you will fall in love just like I did.
