Fashion Director’s cut: 5 directional skirts to give your outfit an edge

Looking to give your everyday wear a bit of oomph? Try these five directional skirts.

With a pair of knee-high boots, skirts are the easiest thing to wear. But “easy” can evolve into boring if you don’t pay attention. Choosing a skirt with a fresh silhouette or unique detailing will give your look a directional feel but doesn’t require any extra bravado as such. Take a look at these five skirts, which I think will elevate a look from humdrum to interesting.

Cos is always my first port of call if I’m looking for something a little bit different. I love the asymmetric silhouette of this skirt, plus the oversized patch detailing; simple but effective.

Mustard and velvet is a tricky combination to pull off, yet I still want this gorgeous skirt from online retailer Bimba & Lola. It’s full of warmth, texture and fluidity. There’s something richly autumnal about it, but super glamorous too. I love how it’s been dressed down here with a T-shirt and chunky boots.

Mini skirts can look a bit samey in my book, but this version from Cos feels very modern. It’s got an edge, but the fabric folds make it extremely feminine too.

You cannot go far wrong with a leather skirt; it will last you for decades. I love this dove grey option from Topshop Boutique (one of my favourite collections to shop). The colour is so versatile and the shape interesting but wearable.

This polka dot skirt is a real wow piece. Pretty Woman with attitude. I love how it’s been styled here too, although a black polo-neck and opaque tights would work just as well if the waist detailing is enough interest for you.
