Ahead of Sunday’s ceremony, we’re looking back at the red carpet style of 2019

Last year’s Bafta red carpet highlights included Margot Robbie in Chanel and Laura Harrier in Louis Vuitton to Amy Adams in Prada, and you can see more of our favourites from 2019 in our gallery above.

And this year, we might see gowns we’ve see on red carpets gone before, as the Baftas have announced their new approach to fashion and sustainability: they have asked all attendees to consider re-wearing an outfit they already own or to choose another sustainable option.

“Sustainability is very important to Bafta, and we’re doing more than ever before,” a spokesperson told Harper’s Baazar. “The goal is that the EE British Academy Film Awards 2020 will be carbon neutral, working towards having a net positive impact on the environment. From travel and food, to branding and materials, Bafta is ensuring the awards are as sustainable as possible.”

All attendees will be or have been provided with a sustainable fashion guide created by the London College of Fashion’s Centre for Sustainability, detailing how to dress more mindfully for award ceremonies.

But, they stress, this is not mandatory.

“Bafta are giving people the tools to do more (e.g offset travel, sustainable fashion guide) should they want to,” the spokesperson added. “The LCF sustainable fashion guide is provided as one small part of our wider sustainability efforts where we are looking at every part of our awards to do more than ever before”.

The guide suggests options for guests to consider regarding renting clothes or buying vintage, as well as offering examples of designers who have sustainable credentials, including Stella McCartney, Phoebe English, Reformation and Rejina Pyo. And of course, encouraging guests to wear something they have already worn before.

We’ll be covering all the gowns on IMAGE.ie from Sunday evening, so be sure to check back.
