The 2019 Golden Globes took place in the early hours of Monday morning. Black wasn’t the universal colour on the carpet this year, but a year on from #TimesUp, the women (and some of the men) showed that it was no less as potent; attendees accessorised with special black-and-white bracelets and ribbons dedicated to the movement which helped to keep the conversation going. Designed by costume designer and stylist Arianne Phillips, the black and white ribbons are part of Time’s Up’s new ‘TIMESUPx2’ campaign. Celebrating the second year of the movement, the campaign looks back on the organisation’s progress thus far. Colour dominated in terms of the fashion, an indication that #MeToo has well and truly bloomed and taken hold – we need not stand together wearing a single colour, we can unite as individuals and make as big an impact.

It was a mix of monochrome with vibrant reds, shimmering slivers, fuchsia pinks and appropriate suffragette white lining the glitzy red carpet.  Irish actresses Caitriona Balfe and Saoirse Ronan are certain to grace many Best Dressed lists with two of the most striking gowns on the carpet. Balfe worked the velvet trend in standout Custom Moschino Couture (refreshingly, she never plays it safe when it comes to red carpets) while Ronan stunned in a shimmering silver Gucci gown with green earrings (no doubt an homage to her roots) and a striking statement lip.

Other notable gowns were worn by Lupita Nyong’o and Regina King, while Lady Gaga’s lavender Valentino Couture gown with her hair and eyeshadow a similar hue (inspired by Judy Garland’s dress in the original A Star is Born) also stood out.

Also, notably, Jessica Chastain walked the Golden Globes red carpet wearing designer Riccardo Tisci, the new artistic director of Burberry’s very first custom red carpet look. The designer, formerly of Givenchy, took over the iconic British brand in 2018.
